Green Computing: Dell's Impact On The Environment

As businesses become increasingly aware of their individual impact on the environment, they may choose to implement new strategies that are aimed at improving the environment while increasing revenues and reducing costs. These strategies are collectively called green computing and include the following approaches of making technology both more effective and eco-friendly: data center and overall energy efficiency, the disposal of electronic waste and recycling, telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, thin client solutions, use of open source software, and the development of new software to address green computing for internal use and potential sale to other organizations. One such company is the multinational computer technology organization, Dell. As stated by the international initiative, Solving the E-waste Problem, approximately 75 million tons of electronic devices were deemed “waste” and disposed of accordingly in 2015 (“Dell Recycling”). Dell has taken on the social responsibility of looking at those discarded electronics not as waste, but as electronic equipment parts that may either be given new life or recycled properly. A program created by Dell which encourages customers to appropriately get rid of unused electronics is their Trade-In Program. When customers are finished using a product, they may trade it into a Dell location in exchange for a gift card to purchase the latest technology. This not only persuades them to responsibly dispose of electronics, but also generates more revenue for Dell through all purchases made with the gift …show more content…
Open source software is computer software in which the source code is available for anyone to inspect or enhance. Open source software such as Linux allows organizations to utilize power more efficiently which results in the decreased need for overly powerful hardware. Through the use of such software, the lifespan of computers and servers can be extended and a company may even opt for recycled equipment (Gralla). LMAX Exchange, a multilateral trading facility, was intentionally built on open source from the start of their company and has experienced great success in their approach. Contributions to their projects have increased from other financial service firms and they have the ability to recruit developers with great ease, all while conserving their resources (Clark).
