Warrant Officer Course Reflection

My defining moment was when I received the news that I was selected to attend the overseas Warrant Officer Course conducted by the Royal Australian Air Force, at the RAAF Base Wagga. Eagerly anticipating the course’s commencement, I did in-depth research, sought the advice of previous candidates, and received useful guidance and encouragement from my family, superiors and friends. This was my first foreign leadership course and I was determined to do well for the course.

The aim of the course was to build on the participants' knowledge and enhance our leadership principles. I were taught to understand and apply the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People established by Stephen Covey. This course provided me opportunities to exercise, practice,

I met the Warrant Officer of the Air Force (WOFF-AF) during the trip and shared with him on my course experience. I was presented with the WOFF-AF coin. It is given to the student who made the most significant contribution to the overall success of the course. I visited the Australian War Memorial to recce for the following day’s presentation and attended the "Last Post" which commemorates the 102,000 Australians who have given their lives in war and other operations over more than a century. At that very evening, I had an informal dining in session with the Deputy Chief of Air force (Dy CAF), RAAF, and the WOFF-AF. I was honoured to be seated beside Dy CAF at the Top Table. I was presented with the WOFF-AF pen by the WOFF-AF and the Air Force Warrant Officer Leadership Compact by the Dy CAF at the end of the Dining In. These tokens signifies that I had officially accepted the roles and responsible of a Warrant Officer. The next day, I presented my research on RAAF involvement in the Vietnam War, focusing on its participation in past conflicts, at the Memorial in the presence of my course mates and public audience. It was exciting and unforgettable as it was my first large group public speaking experience.

The course also provided an opportunity for me to interact and share my views with the Australian WOFFs. Friendships were forged and further strengthened through class activities and bonding sessions after lessons. I was glad that I could adapt quickly enough even though there were many differences between us in term of culture and traditions. I was certainly honoured that I had the opportunity to fly our Singapore flag

In order to be an exemplary leader the authors, Kouzes and Posner, (2012), describe five practices that need to be implemented. Each practice defines leadership and what a leader should strive to perfect in being successful. To model the way shares the same concept of practicing what you preach, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). If you want your subordinates to have a strong work ethic a leader must practice the same, by setting the example in order for others to follow, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012). As a leader you must be willing to roll up your sleeves and put forth the effort, your actions will set the pace, (Kouzes and Posner, 2012).…

Upon my arrival at Commonwealth Honors Academy a mere twelve days ago I was ignorant to the fact that I was going to learn so much in my time spent here, but now I look back and realize that I have gained so much knowledge and I have acquired more details to add to what I knew before arrival. Overall I have learned that most things in life require constant attention and effort to make them truly work and that anyone you come in contact with and create an influence with will then, in turn, make a larger circle of influence that can quickly become bigger than you can ever be. The universal themes that have had the largest impact on me are the themes of Happiness, Friendship, and Sovereignty of Education. It was Aristotle who defined happiness…

At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future. The command philosophy was a statement, written to the members of the unit, about what I valued as a leader. As a foundation for how to approach this philosophy, the CSC coursework described USMC General Lejeune’s teacher/scholar leadership approach (USMC CDET, 2013a). This approach to leadership rests on a foundation of ethics, directly supporting an ethos of core values, mode of conduct, leadership principles, and leadership traits (USMC…

Bennett formally greets her audience as ‘distinguished guests’ and enthusiastically describes her company, bigsplash’s intentions of ‘extending a helping hand’ as part of their ‘ethos’ which promotes bigsplash in a positive, generous light, as a company that is ‘truly inspired’ and cares for the ‘wonderful’ volunteers. The banner features two hands clasped together invoking a sense of companionship between the volunteer groups and bigsplash and acting as a visual reminder to the audience of the institution’s helping role. While the word ‘Volunteers’ is bolded, emphasising the nature of the award, the bigsplash logo features prominently. Being born to and raised by immigrant parents, I observed a daily desire to give me all that they didn’t have and provide pathways for me to follow my dreams. I gained a respect for hard work as well as an ideology of looking out for those around me. The sacrifices they took to send me to private school and ensure that I do well in life motivates me in my plans for the future. It is their inability to live their lives as they pleased and follow their dreams that inspires me to attend and graduate from an institution in which all those attending strive in their fields of study. Due to their dedication, I want to succeed in life and provide a better life for both myself and my family, allowing them to live the rest of their lives without worry, as well as making a difference in the world around me.…

Introduction As I reflect on this course and the results of the Questionnaires, Reflection, and Action Worksheets I have learned many aspects of leadership. I have analyzed the definition of leadership and now have a clearer understanding of it. According to, Introduction to Leadership; concepts and practice, by Peter Northouse (2015), leadership can be composed of many variables such as relationship, trait, ability, skill, behavior, and influence process. He also elaborates on how the “leadership of an individual can be used to influence a group to accomplish a common goal”. In addition, he discusses how leadership is not the same as management (Northouse, 2015, pp. 3-7).…
