By the time you turn 18 and move off to college, you think you know yourself pretty well. Taking the StrengthsFinder Quiz gave me confirmation of some things I saw in myself before and brought an aspect out that I hadn’t recognized before. The five themes I was said to have exemplified most are belief, relator, harmony, empathy, and connectedness. Similarly, my brother brought up my volunteer work in high school and now college as an example of my belief quality. I feel strongly about giving back to my community and plan to open a nonprofit organization when I’m older to help girls all over the world. I believe both show my characteristic of belief. My boyfriend mentioned an example of empathy. He referenced the many times I supported him and listened to anything that was bothering him. He also brought up the night I spent with him in the ER. I never left his side even though he told me to go home. It wasn’t only because I love and care for him, it was also because I knew I wouldn’t want to be alone if I was in his shoes. Growing up, I have always wanted to dedicate myself to doing something special in life. I was born in a village in Mexico where public health and education were very limited. I recall, one day, accompanying my mother to a ladies house where there was a sick child. My mother was one of the women in the village who would take care of the sick; she learned everything she knew from my grandmother. When we got there, I saw my mother prepare some medicine and giving it to the ill child.…

The “strengths” inventory also brought to my attention a detail about my personality that I was oblivious to. One of my top strengths is “significance”, meaning that I want to appear important in the eyes of others. Now that I am aware of it, I can definitely see how it can be true. I do not necessarily want to showcase my significance to the world, rather, I derive pleasure in knowing that people recognize my potential intellectual capacity. This is a good thing because it motivates me to always be the best presentable version of myself.…
