Introduction
Families are like branches on a tree, family members all grow in different directions yet the roots remain as one. As one of my favorite quotes by Scoot King states, that ‘The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members and families”. Family is a complex word to define, because it differs from culture to culture and society to society within one country. These may be forgotten in times of stress and distress, but families do possess them. Strengths and resources are anything that can be used to improve the quality of families and the community life. It can be a person – community members can be empowered to realize and use their capabilities and skills to build and transform their livelihood of their family. Resources and strengths in a community, can also take shape in a manner of physical structures for example; schools, church, or library. Unfortunately, my community lacks a lot of physical structures as resources even though we have schools. Local helpers like community care givers (which we call “Onompilo”) are the most significant local helpers in the community. Their job is to go door-to-door in the families that they know needs assistant with health especially where there are elders who are ill and do not have people to look after them.
