Fair-minded critical thinking is but one of the virtues of a disciplined mind. Intellectual integrity, humility, autonomy, empathy, courage, confidence in reason and perseverance are also virtues of a disciplined mind. Each of these virtues are interrelated and inter-dependent. The development of fair-minded critical thinking requires the ability to treat every viewpoint relevant to a situation in an unbiased, unprejudiced way. This type of thinking is a challenge to the natural mind because it requires thinking and making decisions without reference to the feelings of friends, family or even the view of the nation or the world. Intellectual humility is the ability to recognize that no matter how smart a person is, they simple cannot know everything and therefore must embrace the consciousness of the limits of one 's knowledge. Sensitivity to circumstances can be deceptive and cause dysfunctional thinking and the appearance of arrogance. Intellectual humility is not the same as ignorance but is simply the ability to accept the fact that it is impossible to know all things or be lacking in knowledge about something. The use of clichés and coin phases can be mistaken for deep insight but the use of intellectual humility helps us recognize prejudices and false beliefs. Intellectual courage is required to be a fair-minded thinker because in the face of adversity, courage is required to fairly address ideas, beliefs or viewpoints in which strong negative emotions are present. Because it is based on the belief that people come to their own conclusions, changing the way people think with encouragement and cultivation will allow them to use their own rational faculties for the better serving of humankind. Good reasoning allow for the formation of insightful viewpoints drawn from reasonable conclusions. Confidence in good reasoning is one of the most important virtues because it allows one to have confidence in which to judge whether to accept or reject any belief or position. In the absence of faith, confidence in good reasoning has proven its value. The ability to be an independent thinker is autonomy thinking. It is the internal motivation based on the idea of thinking for yourself, rationally owing your beliefs and values and trusting your own thinking, not dependent on others for direction, ultimately being controlled by their emotions. It is difficult to operate with a double standard in a contemporary world and therefore important to avoid looking at the evidence too closely. The use of integrity and justice, intellectually thinking the idea or situation through with empathy requires perseverance and a healthy dose of humility because the end result may just cause a change in the way one thinks independent of faith with is supposed to be the substance of all
