The Influence Of Physical Science

Improved Essays
An incident I have encountered for three years is failing at science throughout the year. Going through high school enjoying time outside of school and as much time as I could in school, I started to slip with my grades. My grades started to slip fast, especially in science freshman year. That is when it all started.

When it all started freshman year I had Physical Science with Ms. Saxon, she was also my volleyball coach that year so I felt very comfortable with her even though I did not know her teaching techniques. As a few months went on it was nice and easy and smoothly going. In about December right before Christmas vacation we had our first unit test. I did not even think it was going to be hard at all. Therefore I did not study at

This year I took Biology with Ms. McCabe. At first is was very confusing and difficult right away. She even started to make references towards physical science and since I did not really know much about physical science that made me fall back in biology too. It was getting very difficult to try to understand anything the teacher was talking about. Ms. McCabe kept giving out homeworks everyday along with quizzes and tests too. I looked down on myself and failed everything for months but still tried to understand what was going on. The only thing I was decent at doing in biology was the labs because it was a step by step visual and hands on. Although, that unfortunately wasn’t good enough to get a good satisfying grade. I started to do quiz corrections and extra credits almost every week sometimes even twice a week. These were only worth a few points here and therefor but I noticed they finally started to add up and bio started to make sense. Almost every night and every morning before we had a quiz or test I would study hard. Finally, thankfully I passed biology with Ms.McCabe; I very well could have done better and passed with a higher grade if I did better in physical science and at the begin of this

During the second semester of my junior in high school, I collaborated with two other biology students to study for our International Baccalaureate exams in May. I am not trying to say that my teacher was a terrible teacher but the teacher was retiring the following year and did not worry too much about our success in the exams. My two classmates and I decided to form a study group. We each would study and try our hardest to understand particular chapters and then share the chapters with the other two. By going this route, we were able to maximize our knowledge intake on the year and a half biology syllabus which we did not have time for.…

Low grades on test, quizzes, assignment and missing homework were my problem in the class. “Melissa, levantate rapido” that translates to Melissa you have 5 seconds to get up, and be ready or you will feel the wrath of The Chancla (a weapon used from all Hispanic mother’s to demonstrate authority.) Ten seconds after shouting at the top of her lungs for me to get up, my mother begins her day as she always does, providing my father, younger siblings and I with a meal. Which usually consists of the crispy black goya beans and medium sized white eggs all wrapped in a soft warm corn tortilla, I was thirteen when my mom was seven months pregnant, nearly fainted from exhaustion from cleaning houses, but it was not an option, my father's income was just not sufficient enough to support three children and an incoming one. Through my four years in high school, one of the toughest classes I faced was AP biology. The rigorous course involved an intense 48 chapter lesson plan with a 2 hour AP exam at the end of the school year. Near the end of my junior, I was skeptical of taking this class, as I heard from my fellow classmates that the class was difficult to earn a decent grade. With this in mind, I began preparing for the class over the summer by reading the textbook, and practicing using the workbook. As I read the book, I became deeply interested in this subject.…

The goal of Boys & Girls Clubs is: “to provide a world-class Club experience that assures success is within reach of every young person who walks through our doors, with all members on track to graduate from high school, on time, with a plan for the future.” As a Club staff with little weight behind me to support this goal, it makes me a stone’s throw away from being labeled a hypocrite when I almost didn’t graduate from high school, let alone have a plan for the future. My childhood wasn’t glamorous enough to brag about, nor was it full of grief-stricken struggles that would warrant a tug at any heartstrings. It was simple. I grew up with both of my parents and my brother who was 4 years my senior.…
