The most significant challenge, which was the first step to toward my biggest dream, was becoming an exchange student through Future Leaders Exchange Program (FLEX). This opportunity gave me a chance to spend one year in America in the state of Wisconsin, study in an American high school and live in a host family. My host family played a great role in my life. They set an example in my life of how relationships in a family should look like, which I am very grateful for. With a new culture comes a new set of rules and way of life, but I did my best to adjust and participate in every family event. whether that would be attending my host sister basketball game or a family dinner. I also made my best effort to help them every time I had been able to and to respect all family members opinions, even if it had been different from my own. Since American students can choose which subjects they want to partake in, I got a chance to take a completely different coursework including Math, Physics, World Culture, American History, English, Art, and Choir. All classes helped me realize what I actually wanted to do in the future. Taking a World Culture and History class with a teacher who also teaches government, made me recognize my extreme interest in history and government. My family also supported and encouraged me to do some things that I typically did not do but wanted to. No matter what activity was, my family helped me get whatever I needed and also supported me by showing up at various performances and events. Though this act may seem minuscule, it meant a lot to know that I had people who were proud of me and would always love me no matter if I succeeded or failed. Altogether, I know that without the support of my friends and family, I would not be the person that I am…

Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…
