He displayed this throughout the book but mostly during the Robinson trial. Scout once asked Atticus if he was a nigger-lover and the response that was given back to her exhibits his views on racism. “I certainly am. I do my best to love everybody… I’m hard put, sometimes-baby, it’s never an insult to be called what somebody thinks is a bad name.It just shows you how poor that person is, it doesn’t hurt you” (Lee 145). Atticus is one of the only men in Maycomb that reveal what equality should look like. He is a also passing this trate on through his kids, Scout and Jem, by informing them that the black population should be receiving the same treatment as everyone else. “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point view until you climb into his skin and walk around in it” (Lee 39). Atticus’ influence on his children will be passed on from generation creating a domino effect. Hopefully changing the events that happen in Maycomb in the future. Along with the lessons of equality, he teaches Jem and Scout to have courage and stand up for what you beleive in; which is exactly what he did with Tom Robinson. “I want you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is man with a gun in his hand. As the civil rights movement continued on, more and more people were beginning to realize that the events that happened in To Kill A Mockingbird weren’t far off from the events that were accuring to them. The equality in this inspirational novel is what has drawn many people around the world to read its compelling words. This making equality the main theme of To Kill A Mockingbird. “I have a dream that one day every valley shall be exalted, every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made straight and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together”
