Importance Of English Composition

What I learned from English Composition I early on was that College English would not be at all like High School. Therefore, I knew going into English Composition II that the expectations would be even greater. As a result, my expectations at the beginning of this class were as expected, challenging. I expected this class to help prepare me to become a successful writer for college as well as for the world of work. What I didn’t expect was to have a collaborative writing assignment with other students, yet it was interesting to combine our writing styles to come up with a unique paper to present. Throughout this semester we have had numerous assignments to teach us various styles of writing as well as group assignments. The main thing that …show more content…
In each class I have had since being here at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff I have had to write especially in this class. Writing and research has helped me to gain a better understanding of a hypothesis or theory then express my thoughts in writing. In addition to this I find that I am better able to retain the information that I hand write then type. I have completed and learned a lot about writing in this class. These are some of the I wrote about "Facing Poverty with a Rich Girl 's Habits" by Suki Kim, The Cause and Effects of Stress on College Students, College Education Should Be Free To Students, Anthem Book Review, My Home Town, Persuasive Argumentative Essay Chained to Social Media, and the one I enjoyed the most was the Collective writing on Booker T. Washington because although I have heard …show more content…
One way is for everyone to take this class more seriously because what we do in this class can reflect in all the classes we have because they all require us to write. I would like to talk more about other people in our class papers in an effort to improve teaching methods. I think it will help students see if they were going in the same direction as other student as well as a fun activity. I think other students would like to hear the topic from another student’s point of view. There is always room for improvement in writing and I plan to continue to be a lifelong learner. My writing skills at the beginning of this class was about an eight for the level I am as a freshman and now it is about a nine I feel. I plan to improve on my research skills. This class was very fast paced and we did not always have enough time between papers to fully plan, research, and read over topics for understanding in the way that I would have liked

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

This semester I feel that I have somewhat improved as a writer. The first thing from this class that has helped me was the peer reviews. They have decreased the nervousness that I used to feel when I would ask people to help and for suggestions. The second thing that impacted me as a writer was the discussion post about different writing styles and how different people had different processes. The one that impacted me the most was the video about David Sedaris.…

It was a cold, winter morning. The frigid air blew as I turned to pull the handle on the door to the main building of my small high school. After entering the doorway, I dragged my feet across the floor and trudged through the empty hallway. As I peeked through each of the door windows, I saw nothing but dark, empty classrooms. It was not until I looked up that I noticed one lit room at the end of the hall.…

Throughout this portfolio I will demonstrate to my instructor and peers my development throughout our course, including the challenges and successes. I hope my portfolio will serve as a helpful source for me to refer back to in future classes, and aid as a guide for future students and their journey through college. In the beginning of first semester, in English Composition 121, I had preconceived ideas as to what the expectations would be for this class based on my experience eleven years ago. I had pre-determined how I would approach this class and what I was going to do, so never once did I expect to learn something useful.…

AP Language and Composition would be tremendously beneficial in my high school career, but it would also be valuable in my future career in college. I teach "Introduction to Literature" and "Standard Freshman Composition" courses at Suffolk County Community College. I personally design both of my courses, which adhere to the mission statement of the college. In "Introduction to Literature," my students engage in imaginative works of literature, analyze major literary themes and forms, continue training in effective prose writing skills, and demonstrate maturity and thought and style when deconstructing literary elements such as image, plot, character, theme, and conflict. In "Standard Freshman Composition," I prepare my students to produce quality work that utilizes writing techniques, analyzes reading material, and incorporates research techniques that will aide them in their academic future. The outcomes of this course are for the student to be able to construct a central purpose in their expository work, to have coherent organization, improved writing mechanics, to formulate effective thesis statements that demonstrate complex thought, and to integrate relevant, cited sources into their work.…

For students like me who is studying at HACC, wring an essay, doing research and citing sources in written assignment is very difficult. During my first year at Spelman College, I have not necessarily acquired any new writing skills. However, I have definitely sharpened three imperative writing skills, including: forming my ideas, reasoning, and synthesis (based on readings and discussions) to develop the content of my essays, integrating sources and evidence that corroborate my beliefs, and making my writing more clear and concise. In addition, I still stand in the process of learning to write well under the pressure of time constraints. To illustrate my points, At Spelman, I have been required to read and discuss for every single class I have enrolled in.…

At the beginning of the semester, I viewed myself as a creative writer. After attending this class I realized that there is a lot more that goes into writing an essay, or a research paper, than just creativity alone. I have learned that it is very important to be aware of my strengths and weaknesses in my writing. Taking this class has helped me understand the strengths and weaknesses in my writing skills, and it has given me the opportunity to strengthen the areas in which I was weak. An example of this is that I have become aware of my grammar and spelling errors as the semester progressed.…
