Energy Usage on Campus When we use the amount of energy we do in today’s times, we sometimes take it for granted, considering how much it takes to make the world spin. When a college campus like ours have thousands of students here on campus, the amount of energy we use can add up quickly. Investing in something like solar and wind energy would do wonders for our campus. Thinking about the amount of electricity our campus uses is mind boggling, and taking some measures to help reduce it would help a lot of things. Adding some renewable energy resources to our campus would make us much more green, as well as help save money and time in the future. Let me guide

The two students that I talked to are JV and MH, and they had some very different takes on it. I talked to JV about what he thinks should be done about the possibility of solar panels on campus. “I think that would be a great idea to think about now, considering that the price of solar panels is only going to grow, and it would save the University a lot of money” (JV). I asked MH the same question, and he saw it from a different angle. “If we don’t invest now, not only are the students on campus going to suffer because of it, they are going to be in a hole for the near future. You should look at the way the world is going, and see how green energy is doing so much good for so many different people” (MH). I then proceeded to ask them what they think about how clean and green energy would do for them during their time in school. MH had a strong opinion about this particular question. “If the campus had already put solar panels or some sort of green energy into effect here, then I don’t think I would be paying as much for schooling. Most of the housing costs that we have to pay is for electricity, and if it was run through solar panels that I’m pretty sure that I would paying like half of what I pay now” (MH). JV had a strong response to this question as well. “We have to realize that our generation is the one that is going to make or break the planet when it comes to energy. If all of us on campus stand together, then we can have a major impact on whether something like this happens on campus or not. I think that we have to be the ones to speak up and say that we want this to be changed so it won’t only help us, but also everyone else in the world” (JV). Just getting responses from two of my fellow undergraduates, it shows how this affects us and how it would help us moving forward. The solution is

Energy independency has now become an international subject, spreading with radical pioneers who seek independence from the local power grid. Henk Rogers reiterates, through his campaign to run his house on solar electricity and amicable quest to ensure Hawaii's electrical independency by 2045, that energy independency is accomplished when an individual or even a community can successfully supply their own energy needs without assistance from the power grid. Through his tenacious aspiration to encourage residents to go off grid, Rogers has inspired countless residents to become energy independent. In doing so, he has prioritized it as his ‘number one’ objective, insistent to reduce carbon emission from combustible fuels. The key factor that lead him to partake of the clean energy movement was perturbing fact that Hawaii’s hallmark coral reefs are perishing in the increasingly acidic ocean.…

In Energy justice: Conceptual Insights and Practical Applications, Benjamin K. Sovacool and Michael H. Dworkin argue that the narrative around energy and its problems need to change - that a focus on "justice" needs to be added to the equation. The idea of using "energy justice" as a conceptual, analytical, and decision-making tool is introduced and the main goal of the article is to is to educate the general public, - "students, consumers, planners, and policymakers" - so that they can make more meaningful energy related decisions. To do so, the ideas of "energy justice as a conceptual tool", "energy justice as an analytical tool" and "energy justice a decision-making tool" are all discussed in detail. Fossil fuels (oil, gas, and coal) have been the pillar of our modern society since the Industrial Revolution. There is no further doubt that fossil fuels have a high density of energy and they are the world’s dominant energy source. Even though these non-renewable resources have a variety of applications like fuel for transportation, electricity, plastic, medicine, and chemicals, they are also the largest emitters of carbon dioxide which causes human health and environmental issues. Every economic aspect the United States depends completely on these fossil fuels. An effective way to address the United States’ fossil fuel dependency is by relying on renewable sources of energy, learning how to conserve energy, recycling and reusing products…

Solar power, simply put, is energy that comes from sunlight. Solar energy is used to power things such as streetlights, homes, or even smaller things such as calculators. Many people have switched to solar energy to power their home’s electrical appliances, as it is commonly believed that solar energy is better for the planet. While solar energy does provide us with energy without burning fossil fuels, there are also other effects on the planet. Before understanding how solar energy impacts the earth, one must understand how solar panels work in the first place.…

Can Alternative Energy Ever Replace Fossil Fuels? Climate change and increasing levels of greenhouse gases have become an ever growing problem in the world today. There are many effects of climate change that have been documented from the latter part of the twentieth century until now. This significant change is due to the introduction of industrialization in society and how it has changed the equilibrium of the atmosphere by drastically increasing levels of CO2, a gas emitted from burning fossil fuels. We depend on fossil fuels for electricity and transportation.…

The most popular methods currently available are photovoltaics, wind turbines and biomass boilers. It is important not to just start installing these as standard without looking at the individual building requirements and capability for obtaining energy through these means. It would be unsustainable to carry out costly installations and not achieve the desired results. Biomass boilers are by far the best method for energy production but they are most efficient when there is a constant draw on that energy. Short College days and holiday periods do not make this practical for application to a College only but could be more effective if used to provide energy throughout the community.…

When it comes to the topic of investing the government 's money, one controversial issue has been whether or not we are spending it properly. On the one hand, some people will argue that the government should invest more money expanding oil and gas. While others contend developing wind and solar energy would be the smartest way to go. Mark Lewis argues that oil prices could stay so low that is no longer economic to bring in high cost new oil fields. But even if the oil price does rise, it will not be able to compete with a renewable such as solar and wind.…

Solar panels, biofuels, and other sustainable technologies are still new and developing in many areas and individual implementation of infrastructure and maintenance can be extremely cost prohibitive. The role of government in this scenario is to redistribute funds and resources to both individuals and industries to make sustainability economically accessible. The best way to do this is through government subsidies and grants that fund companies and researchers dedicated to implementing and improving sustainable technology. This investment in the future will spur the private sector to invest in sustainability as well as provide money to hone the science behind sustainable industries. As corporate infrastructure develops alongside technology, the price of being sustainable will drop as a result of increased competition.…
