On September the 8th 2009 the President of the United States, Barack Obama, held a “Back to School speech” at Wakefield High School in Virginia. In the speech, Barack Obama emphasizes the importance of education not only for the individual but also for the country through the use of bond, repetition, and destination.
Throughout the speech, Obama is able to create a bond with the audience, which makes it easier for the audience understand his message. Obama is speaking to students and therefore the speech needs to be easy to understand and relatable for children and teenagers. He is especially creating a bond through the use of anecdotes. He tells the audience about his own life and education: “I got a lot of second chances and had the opportunity to go to college, and law school, and follow my dreams”. Through this personal anecdote, he showing the audience that he has been able to get an education even though he faced problems. In this way, he is using pathos in order to appeal to the audiences’ feelings, since many of them might have a similar dream of going to college and follow their dreams.
