Personal Narrative: My Experience At Guy B. Teachey Elementary School

When I think back to elementary school, I always reminisce about Mrs. Johnson’s 4th grade class. She was my favorite teacher during my youth at Guy B. Teachey Elementary School. Mrs. Johnson, to begin, was in her 25th year of teaching when I was in her class. During her time, she taught one year of 3rd grade and then taught 4th grade for her remaining years. She had a genuine love for North Carolina captured by her weekly piano playing of North Carolina songs. Every week, the entire class sat on a small rug, sang to “Carolina in my Mind” and was captivated by tales of North Carolina. Because of Mrs. Johnson, our class was fun, and from what I remember, happy. We raised chicks from eggs, traveled to Raleigh, played kickball together, and embraced the awkwardness of Matthew trying to kiss every girl in our class. We were lucky enough to have a seasoned teacher who cared about our learning and classroom environment. In addition, we went to a small public school with a fast acting PTO team. Never once did we go without the needed resources in our class, and if there was a need, local fundraising initiatives filled the need almost instantly. …show more content…
Johnson and Teachey School provided our classroom. As seen in the picture, we had a full library, which was among one of the many luxuries our school afforded. Looking more closely at my class, I start to notice the racial dynamics of the class. First, I notice we had a large class mostly comprised of boys. Out of our class of 24, we only had 6 students of color. More intriguing, there were no girls of color. Realizing this, it makes me question the entire make up of our school. Did all classes look mostly like ours? Our school was majority white and thinking back the staff was entirely white. Noticing this makes me question, how did this trend affect my education and my views on how education should

All throughout my school career, starting all the way in elementary school, school came very easy for me. I found that I rarely had to try hard at anything because it seems like I just knew it. With very little studying I was able to maintain high grades. In middle school I was put in advance math classes and it still wasn't a challenge but then in my junior year of high school things started to get difficult.…

There was an instance on page four where an Asian teacher had lost her job. “Here are wonderful teachers such as Corla Hawkins almost everywhere in public schools. The rationale behind much of this writing is that pedagogic problems in our cities are not chiefly matters of injustice, inequality, and segregation. Look around, have you ever realized how privileged you are? How you can walk into school and never have to deal with racism? You get to talk to your teacher and not feel like race will impact his/her answer. The school has one hundred and seventy-five children, from grades kindergarten through third (School Directory, 2015). Forty-six percent of the school is made up of Caucasian students. The student to teacher ratio is 14 to one (School Directory, 2015). The diversity in the school was neat to see. The elementary I attended was ninety percent white, so it was nice to see all the students from different backgrounds playing together.…

My time at Barnegat High School has helped me to become who I am today and will most defiantly impact what I will do in the future. The teachers and my peers have all been an influence on my life and during the four years that I spent at the school, I have done some things for the school and the community as a way to thank them for giving me the opportunities that they have. It was they who pushed me to keep trying and striding to succeed and without them, I would not have accomplished what I have today. One of the things that I am most proud of doing is helping to bring new clubs and activities to Barnegat High School. This year, with the help of other students and advisors, a new club made it into the ranks of the diverse sea of clubs and groups that already exist.…

Before Harriet Taylor became the Principal she is today, she entered Bay District Schools as a third grader at none other than Springfield Elementary School, saying “It’s kind of cool that I got to start my career in the district here and now I get to end it here.” At Springfield, Harriet found her love for school. She describes her family as “abusive and very poor.” For her, the school became a break from her tumultuous home life, a place where she saw adults who lived their lives in a way that she admired. “Back then they sold ice creams on Friday, and my family could never afford to buy one, so my fifth-grade teacher Mrs. Snell used to let me stay after school and clean the chalkboards and then she’d buy me an ice cream as payment,” Harriet says fondly.…

This allowed me to get close to all of my classmates and have a better understanding about them. My history and english classes put a lot of emphasis on how people differ racially, ethnically, and by social class. Coming from a smaller school and being able to get along with everyone, I did not even notice a difference between one student from another.…

For the first five years of elementary school, I attended the small school located at the back of our church’s property. Enrollment ranged from about 10-15 students in 1st through 8th grade. The last three years of my grade school experience were spent attending Lodi Seventh-day Adventist Elementary. This school went from kindergarten to 8th grade and fed into Lodi Academy, so in all, kindergarten through 12th grade! I came from a small, two-room school, and seeing as I was not very accustomed to being with such a large body of students, suddenly becoming immersed in a class with more students than that of my entire old school was definitely intriguing!…
