Octavia Butler presents many ideas in her novel Parable of the Sower that having a good education is important for surviving in the world and time period that Lauren, her family, and her friends live in. Early in the story Lauren acts like a parent out of all the kids. She is the one who has to hunt, stay brave and make sure things stay sane while her dad is gone. And once her dad died education for her became even more important since she was on her own. She taught herself to read and write from reading books in his fathers library. She learned sharp skills that people in the story don 't have. But, her being able to read and write inspired the people she was around to do the same. It helped her believe strongly in her religion and guide …show more content…
Friends and anything but school are my real strengths. The bell rings and I think to myself “Oh great here comes another class for me to just fail” sounding so happy as I look! not. Its a bad attitude i know but I cant help it, its just how my brain works. So I just walk down the halls dreading the next class Im going to have to sit through. My parents are always telling me that education is the most important thing in life, which I do agree. I believe education is the most important thing in life but its just hard for me to maintain good grades. Which is weird considering both my parents graduated from Yale. But I blame it on my parents for giving me bad learning genes. Education is a big role in your life. It gets you into college, a job, and gets you money. Since I cant keep my grades up in high school then I don 't know how I’m supposed to make it through the rest of my life. It stresses me out to think like that so I tend not too. I come home everyday to my parents constantly nagging me about my grades. My response every time is “Ya I know, ill talk to my teacher, she must have entered the wrong grade.” and of …show more content…
now I wouldn 't want to talk bad about myself but Im pretty much the definition of lazy. Ill admit it. I skip a lot of my first period which is chemistry (which is a pretty important class) just to sleep in and when i do come i tend to sleep there, and thats when i get in trouble. I always catch myself day dreaming off in class and missing a whole lesson and you could totally tell I missed that lesson once i got my test back from that lesson. And once i get that test back from that lesson guess what i got! A D! I got lucky i got lucky on the multiple choice. Im a junior now and from what people have told me this is “The most important year of my high school years” well.. lets hope for the best is what i respond. Its really hard when all your friends have applied and got acctepeted into their dream colleges and your sitting here and don 't even have good enough grades to apply to a university. I guess i should have paid more attention freshman and sophomore year. oops. I really hated to admit it but my parents were right. Having a good education is the most important thing. It sets you up for life and college and the years to come after that. And trust me no one should be in the position Im in right now. It

Dictionary.com defines humanity as, 1.Human beings collectively; the human race; humankind. 2.The quality or condition of being a human; human nature. 3.The quality of being humane; kindness; benevolence. As humans in a world where there are such communities that thrive off of the destruction that they may cause, we work very hard to keep things in order, like, sticking to our faith, making sure that we have ourselves in order, and having a trustworthy group of people around us. Doing those things make us feel secure, as if we have everything under control and don’t have to worry. Octavia Butler’s novel, Parable of the Sower, supports my thesis with the experiences that Lauren has throughout the novel.…

Middle school was the time of one’s educational career where homework was a heavy influence on grades. In high school, it’s much more complex than that, for one has to exhibit effort on homework, quizzes, and anything that is assigned. This is crucial because one should always be using the maximum effort in any assignment. Effort is a good habit that is a key component to success and can lead to other essential skills, such as time management. Procrastination is the enemy of effort. If you have less time to do something, it’s more likely that you will not put as much effort into it, or the work may be poor compared to if you started it…

In Parable of the Sower Octavia E. Butler develops Lauren as a protagonist who, as she grows, is a character with conflicting emotion. I believe this is done because Lauren is a teenager and so are a majority of the readers and as you develop you start to form your own beliefs on certain subjects. I can relate with Laurens religious dilemma, because I am currently questioning “what if” and it always buts me in a scary, uncomfortable position of which side I should take. As I think more and more about it i begin to be hesitant because if there is a higher entity than what will happen is I stop being faith to this higher entity. Lauren questioned God and compared him to greek god, I also began to do so because my Catholic God was developed later…

The research question I have selected is important to me because I can connect to it with a strong passion. The research question has to do with where I am today as a human being and my vision for 2066 hopes to improve today’s world. In 2016 the election year, the campaigns have had an influence on the people worldwide. I am a proud US citizen thanks to the sacrifices my parents made, but I am also very fortunate to be Hispanic. Unfortunately, in this world there are people who are racist and refuse to see individuals who are different and respect them for who they are, human beings. I am against those who think that individuals are defined by their culture or where they come from. I think that despite our physical differences, we are all human…

Starting high school is an overwhelming feeling as it’s the last four years of schooling where it was time to look at my strengths and weaknesses in order not to fail. I never really thought that hanging out with friends would change my focus on school. Although I had every intention to pass all my classes, peer pressure got to me to where school wasn’t important anymore. I wasn’t an A straight student nor was I good at sports, but I never intended to fail any courses. Even though I didn’t pass all my classes, it was the fact that when I failed them, it was my parent’s disappointment where I truly felt like a failure.…

While this might seem ridiculous, it absolutely tore me up. I had always gotten all ‘As’ and I thought that I needed perfect record to get into a good college, to get a good job, so that I could have a good life. I believed only then I could be happy. I tired using the internet, I went in for tutoring with a local professor, and I asked my mom to review my homework every night. I tried my best, and I got a ‘B’. It was a high ‘B’, but no matter what anyone told me, I felt it was inadequate. This turned to me believing myself to be inadequate. I felt sad and stressed all the time. To my surprise, my negative feelings leaked into summer. This is when I realized that something had to…

Education has affected my life in positive and negative ways. My freshman year of high school was a great year. I was playing football and getting good grades. I stayed out of trouble and I stayed positive. I had enough credits to go to the next grade. My sophomore year, thought, I had plenty of friends who really distracted me. It wasn’t their fault; it was mine. I wasn’t taking my education very seriously at that moment. I thought it was a joke and I never paid attention to my teachers. I never did my homework. I knew coming into it that I was always a big procrastinator but now it’s even worse at college. I need to be more ready to work whenever, it feels like only when I go to the library or study room that I am ready to work or learn. I feel like I need to be in the right environment to be focused and that involves blocking out distractions like my phone or tv. I definitely have a lot of strengths and weaknesses, I learned one of my strengths is math and one of my weakness is writing and English. My ACT scores reflected that so I should’ve expected that. I am working every day to make my weakness my strengths but it is challenging at times. I also learned if you lay your goals out in front of you, they are easy to achieve. You cannot go into a class and not have goals because you will end up not achieving what you would like to achieve. Having goals also serves as motivation for me, so it is important that I have goals that I am looking to reach at the beginning of the semester. My main goal for all around is to achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher in order to get into my attended major. Every time I think about not doing homework or skipping class I think about the 3.0 GPA and how much money my parents are paying to send me here. I do not want to disappoint my parents or waste their money. I am sure my parents have big expectations for me and I am looking to fulfill those at all…
