Give Us Medical Autonomy or Give Us Death…
As teenagers we cannot wait to grow up, to be able to make all those “adult” choices and finally be able to do what you want. My generation and future generations are becoming more and more eager to “grow up” and have autonomy that it might actually have us miss out on key lessons of growing up; but one area that that we are not be able to grow into is the medical world. An article from The Health Affairs shows that medical issues are increasing more and more everyday, particularly correlated with obesity. (Strum et al., 2004) So being able to function efficiently and effectively in the medical world is sadly going to be a more needed skill. So what does this mean for us? Some might think that taking

Most adolescents are capable individuals. This means that for the most part, unless unable to act for their greater good, teenagers age 13-18 are generally qualified, capable, and able to act for themselves because they have no prior conditions that would inhibit them. The difference that this would make for the rest of us is that it would be a huge change for people, including parents and doctors. The way that it would change for parents is that it would be making them more responsible to inform their child of the pros and cons of the choices, instead of just acting on their behalf. It would change more for the doctors because they are going to have to simplify the plan to help the adolescent be informed, to make an informed choice. It will also change the adolescent because they will have more responsibility and more life experience at a younger age; which I think is really important for our society. Maximizing autonomy for adolescents would have so many benefits by increasing the adolescents skills, but for this research we will only look at the benefit on the individual. These skills would be maximizing autonomy would increase individualism, learning how to balance opinions and gain …show more content…
An article from Planned Parenthood has the laws for every state relating to abortions. Currently there are fourteen states that require no parental consent or knowledge of the abortion, twenty one states require that you have permission from one parent, grandparent, guardian, or an older sibling of at least 21 years of age, three states require permission from both parents, twelve states require that you tell one parent, grandparent, guardian, or an older sibling of at least 21 years of age, 48 hours before you get an abortion and in any of these states a judge or sometimes a doctor can excuse you of this requirement. (Judicial Bypass, 2016) If adolescents getting an abortion without parents knowing about them is our one fear for granting them medical autonomy it shouldn 't even be a fear because that is basically what is going on already. Why are we not going to grant autonomy for these responsible teens for something that is already happening? Oh, then they talk about birth control. “21 states and the District of Columbia explicitly allow all minors to consent to contraceptive services. 25 states explicitly permit minors to consent to contraceptive services in one or more circumstances. 3 states allow minors to consent to contraceptive services if a physician determines that the minor would face a health hazard if she is

Personally, I do highly believe that Adolescents have the right to make autonomous medical choices but this is a highly argumentative subject. I feel as if my parents shouldn’t have to confirm everything about me, for I am my own person by 15 even though they still look at me as their “baby-girl”. Lets face it by 15 i’m not so much of a baby anymore, i’m not completely grown yet but i’m far enough away from the baby stage and am perfectly capable to make my own decisions by now. Parents have the right to make choices for us as children but I don’t feel it’s necessary by the time we hit the “Adolescent” stage in life because by then we have the right mind and knowledge about things to make our own decisions.…

Autonomy and Ethical Principles of Care Gunnar Kupfer Grand Canyon University HLT-305 October 16th 2016 Ethics in health care could be life or death. Patients have a lot of rights when it comes to health care, yet patients don’t even know what they are. Basic consent forms truly don’t adequately inform patients of their rights. Consent forms are written in high levels and use words most wont understand. The average person simply cannot read a Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy consent form.…

Many people may ask if adolescents have the right to make autonomous medical choices. In my point of view there are pros and cons to it. There are some choices that they can make and other choices that parents or guardians should make. Some adolescents do not like to get shots but there are some that are necessary to life. For an example at the age of sixteen teens are supposed to get a Meningococcal Vaccine (MCV4).…

I do not think adolescents have the right to make autonomous medical choices because of multiple reasons. They could be wrongly influenced, not understand some of the effects, be ignorant, or just want to be rebellious and disagree with a parent, guardian, or adult(s). If you are under 18 you are considered a child and therefore your parent, guardian or whomever is in charge of makes mostly all of your decisions for you or at least the have the authority to. 18 is usually a magic age number to refer to kids, at this age kids become adults and they have the option to make their own decisions for themselves. Also at 18 years old they are referred to as adults to society.…

So with that being said childen should have the right to make their own autonomous medical choices, or at least have some kind of say so. I mean, it’s their body! If you’re dealing with having a choice to abord a child or keep it, then I think that the child should have say so, rather than the parent depending on what the situation is. Imagine being in a world where teen girls could get their own birth control. Us females all know being in the doctor’s office with their mother or father and being asked that question “Are you sexually active” and scared to respond to question because you don’t know how your parent will take it. You want to be on birth control just for protection and to do the right thing but sometimes parents will say no because that might just give you the pass to go out and have sex. About 40 percent of sexually active teenagers admit to using any type of protection because they aren’t on any type of birth control and scared of pregnancy. The ages between 14-18 teenage girls get pregnant during these times which mean they are entering high school or ready to graduate get pregnant and don’t even get the chance to graduate or just drop out and the main reason for this is because they aren’t on birth control or wasn’t using protection.…

However, those who are supporting forcing teens to notify or get consent from their parents to “promote the best interests of young women and improve family communications” fail to realize they are stripping teens of their right of privacy which is unconstitutional. In France, the government pays for girls to have birth control without parental consent, and as the government pays for it, that adds another level of privacy. They are doing this because they believe it will “reduce the teen pregnancy rate” (Judy Molland) which they think is also due to “ignorance, taboo and lack of access to contraception” (Judy Molland). Many do not see keeping contraception’s away from teens as a safe way to keep them from having sex or running into sexual…
