One of the many factors that held Douglass back in the 1800’s was his social status. Being as though Douglass was a slave, he had no financial or personal freedom because he wasn’t allowed to get an education or go to school due to the fact that he was considered property instead of a human being and for this reason is why he decided to become educated, Knowing that the one thing no one could take away from him was his education and knowledge. Fast forwarding to today’s society, Education is renowned to be the key to many freedoms including economic and personal freedom. The personal freedom aspect of being educated allows everyone to be able to do anything they want in life career wise and in general. In my opinion personal freedom is the ultimate freedom because it permits everyone to do anything they want to do. The importance of gaining an education and being appreciative to the freedoms we have today is very significant in the sense that without an education everyone is a slave.
Education continues to pave the way for freedom in present day America just as it did for Douglass in the 19th century, by giving everyone a choice as to whether or not they want to become intelligent or remain in the same mindset as a slave.
