Eco-tourists interacts more with the locals than the usual tourist who rarely leave their westernized hotels. Home stays and eco-lodges gives the tourists an opportunity to experience local lifestyles and customs first-hand, and this helps to preserve and sustains the region’s heritages such as traditional festivals, ceremony and art shows including dance and music.

Factors such as lack of a workable plan for national ecotourism that is business oriented that is required to identify ecotourism sites, demand and supply issues, high risks (inclement weather, climate change, communication difficulty, and natural adversities), low prices syndrome and low profit margins, lack of awareness and understanding of ecotourism by stakeholders, lack of training and communication skills of stakeholders, lake of funding from the federal government, lack of enforcement due to manpower or funding, and remoteness and unclear boundaries of protected areas could be huge issues for ecotourism …show more content…
If the model is not taken care of properly it could negatively affect the sustainability of ecotourism industry in Malaysia. Ecotourism activities can be a threat to the biodiversity, primate habitats, wildlife become scarce, quality of visitor experience will decline, and tourist might choose some other destination due to poor management of the parks. In Malaysia, particularly in Sarawak, the state government has made many statements to encourage the development of ecotourism as a means of income generating activities, and also a significant component of federal and state sustainable forestry
