Participant Assessment: Ecological Theory
I chose the Ecological Theory for assessing my participant. The Ecological Theory, according to Urie Bronfenbrenner states that the ecosystems theory is a theoretical standpoint that shows how people adapt to their environment and cope with problems (Morgaine, Capous- Desyllas, 2015). There are five systems within the Ecological Theory: The Micro-system, Mesosystem, Exosystem, Macrosystem, and a Chronosystem. As a social worker using the Eco systemically oriented practice, I would focus on changing Michael’s environmental stressors while also changing his systems (Miley, O’ Melia, & DuBois, 2017). Michael and I both believe that these two programs would best benefit him. Michael will participate with a Licensed Clinical Social Worker on Tuesdays and Fridays. Michael will start off with individual sessions. Michael will successfully participate in counseling services to address his history of violence. He is encouraged to invite his family as he progresses further along in his sessions. The location of the LCSW is approximately 20 minutes from his house. Michael was provided with a bus pass to assist with transportation. His sessions will be 30 minutes in duration with the LCSW after school. I will follow up with Michael once a week via telephone. Michael making his own decisions and finding ways that he believes is best to solve his issues. As a social worker I may not agree with every decision he might make but I must be cognizant of his rights.
Confidentiality may be an issue that arises. Both myself and Michael should be clear on the rules about confidentiality and maintain open communication about what information can and cannot be shared. It is important that I remember Michael still has rights to confidentiality even though he is a minor. As a Social Worker I must always make it clear to Michael that I am a mandated reporter and that anything he says that is incriminating or harmful to himself or others must be reported by me.
Influence of Personal, Diversity, and Contextual Variables on working relationship and Client Participation and Engagement
The fact that I am a young African American female can affect Michel’s participation with me. My race and gender can cause Michael to have some hesitation to work with me. These variables may also work in my favor if Michael prefers to work with a minority racial group. As Michael’s social worker it is important for me to be aware of Michael’s culture and to express cultural sensitivity. Economic justice also plays a big role in the social worker client relationship. It is important that I work for justice, equity, and show compassion when working with
