Early Childhood Environmental Report

The learning environment is a very important aspect in early childhood Education which needs great consideration. The environment needs to be supportive, attractive and friendly to children. When designing the ECE environment it must be considered that it is developmentally appropriate, homelike and welcoming, these allows care routines to be carried out in a way that nurtures children’s sense of wellbeing and supports children to achieve autonomy, independence, initiative, a sense of competence and self-worth. Living in the multi-cultural society our children need to learn their own culture and as well as others.
To find out more about the environment and the inclusion of cultural diverse programme, I visited the Early Childhood Center and observed the programme that was implemented with 4-5 year olds. I also observed how the center embraces cultural diversity and compared how the Pacific Island countries have moved in time. Firstly I found the environment very welcoming, attractive, clean and safe, and the aesthetic elements were highly considered.

The programme planned and implemented is for holistic development. In the center the Fijian Curriculum Guideline “Na Noda Mataniciva” is used. The programme is planned using the curriculum guideline. The programme was inclusive where all the children were considered though the focus children were four. The play based learning was acknowledged in the center. Children were encouraged to be confident learners and capable as well as resourceful and participate actively in their own learning. Teachers were allowing children to make choices and respected children’s abilities. Also children’s views and ideas were considered in reflection and follow up
