Importance Of Donate To Charity Essay

Decent Essays
Charities are created to help people in need. When the opportunity to donate is presented to us, it’s easy to think of a dozen reasons why we shouldn’t have to be amongst all the other people who have already donated. But if people truly took the time to think of what even the smallest donation could do, a lot more people wouldn’t think twice when asked to donate whatever they feel acceptable. Donating to charities doesn’t just help out the people who can benefit from the donations, but it helps give the donor a sense of heroism. With the world today, we need heroes wherever we can find them; which is why it is extremely beneficial to help give back, not just to those in need, but to our community as a whole.

We currently live in a greedy world; where people, not all but a large sum, choose to put themselves first before others. If the number of people who donate has any hope of rising over the coming years, one of the main things we have to promote in coming generations is selflessness. If kids were to see their parents or other adults giving, then they’re more likely to develop the mindset to give as well. I can speak from personal experience that kids do in fact look up to adults or even just those who inspire them. When I was eight years old I had found out that my older cousin who was fifteen at the time chose to donate all of his Christmas gifts to his local children’s hospital instead of receiving them for himself like he has done all the years passed. My first thought was how shocked I was that he’d chosen to give up his gifts. My second thought was almost a sense of guilt; that I had a pile of gifts from Santa and there were other kids in the world who were lucky if they got just one. And my last thought was a sense of pride. Pride that he had the heart to do something I hadn’t even thought of because I was too interested in which latest and greatest toys I could be receiving that Christmas. To this day, that time in my life plays a large part in my decision making when given the opportunity to give to others, or in this sense, donate to charity. Because what it came down to was me realizing that I was fortunate enough to have a privileged life growing up. So if I was given the chance, why wouldn’t I choose to help others who weren’t raised the same way? I wanted to make a difference, and I knew that giving to others would be a great start in making that come

The first essay I read is written by Charles Kenny “Haiti Doesn’t Need Your Old T-Shirt”, in Kenny’s essay, he argues that those who are in need would rather receive money instead of clothes, food and other necessities. As I was reading this essay, I question the validity of his arguments, does giving money solve these problems? I do think that when we give money to developing countries it is advantageous, however Kenny’s theme throughout his essay “bottom line: giving donations of cash are nearly always more effective” (254). I feel that his thought and claims are highly subjective. Kenny talks of organizations such as the NFL, World Vision, and British NGO and how these organizations donate to “SWEDOW” (Stuff we don’t want).…

If I couldn’t spend the $1,000,000 on myself, I would spend the $1,000,000 to help the Wounded Warrior Project because there are so many soldiers out there in hospitals or in trenches that are wounded and may not have the medication or right kind of help they need. Also my grandfather was in the Korean War and lost both his legs from the knees down. I wouldn’t want people to suffer just like him and so many others. Maybe if they had the correct help or even better help they could have kept their limbs. For every US soldier killed, seven are wounded.…

On a blazing hot afternoon, I was with my Peer Ministry. It seemed like our whole group, interacting with the sizable population of homeless on the streets of Riverside, CA, was working like a fast food crew; we were distributing food from our cars at a superhuman pace. This activity seemed like any ordinary job our group did together — until I handed a brown paper bag to a homeless African American man. His expression registered shock. He put his hand on my shoulder and said, “Son, how did you know I needed help?”…

I volunteered at the Forest Mall for the Tootsie Roll Drive. This organization provides service for those people with intellectual disabilities. What I physically did while volunteering at the Forest Mall was hand out Tootsie Rolls outside to the people that donated money. I also would kindly ask people to donate as they came in or out of the mall. I kept a kind and loving smile on my face to welcome anyone who was willing to donate.…

One of the activities I do that is substantial to me is volunteering as a Kettle Host during Winter for the Salvation Army. Through Christmas Kettles, I collect donations from the society to help give back to the less fortunate in our community. What volunteering for the Salvation Army has taught me is that even the smallest effort can make a tremendous impact. When I first started off as a volunteer, I did not feel motivated enough to believe what I was doing would truly have an impact. I had this mindset which led me to believe that the happenings in our community did not concern me, although, I began to have a change of opinion as I kept volunteering.…

In today’s materialistic world, we are told that possessions and wealth will bring us meaning when in actuality they only bring temporary satisfaction and leave us craving more. We are so caught up in satisfying our own needs and wants that we rarely take time to look around us at the needs of others. Even when we do see others suffering, many of us are too busy to help or makeup excuses as to why we can’t aid them in their time of need. We look up to celebrities like Paris Hilton and 50 Cent who lead lavish, wasteful, and selfish lifestyles and often aspire to be like them. Many of these stars give little money to charity, and if they do it’s not publicized.…

There are many different ways in order to give back to the community. A few of these ways include money, time and attitude. Money is, of course, essential to living, therefore a huge amount of money would definitely be helpful but not always necessary. One person does not need to give thousands of dollars to make a difference because someone else can give one dollar and still impact the community. It should be an effort from everyone in the community to give back that way one person doesn 't have to give everything.…

An elderly woman who got to take part in a high school community service project states, “Many think that volunteering is all about what you give. But what catches you by surprise is how much you receive in return.” This demonstrates why many people do not feel that they should give back because they do not believe the benefits that they can get from it as well. Consequently, when creating that feeling of happiness and satisfaction in someone else’s life, it comes back to the person creating it. Volunteering to help someone get tutored, help the handicapped, involve themselves with a program like Meals on Wheels, certain environmental work, etc., not only does one gain from that, but one’s community has been helped because of them.…
