Reflective Essay: Diversity In High School

Most of the activities I have engaged in, has given me the opportunity to immerse myself in different diversities. The two that have significantly helped me are Chicago public school youth leader and being a student at the university of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. As a Chicago Public School Freshmen connection youth leader, I was responsible for making sure the incoming freshmen transition to high school as smooth as possible. Although it only took 10 weeks of my summer for the past three years, being a youth leader continued beyond the summer. In fact, it carried over into the rest of my high school years and into college. Being the only few face that the freshmen recognized, I was approached by the freshmen and other students for aid which ranged from questions about directing them to their classes to helping them with their home works and suggestions.
When it came to diversity, being a youth leader gave me a lot of exposure. I had to work with other youth leaders not only from my school, but youth leaders from other Chicago Public schools. We came up with ideas, activities, games and course materials with the goal to positively influence freshmen.

My work was titled “Color Blindness Leads to White Privilege”. My process of acquiring documents, and information to include in my research exposed me to the diversity on campus. Most individuals had the preconceived idea that the school was segregated and the administration were solely to be blamed. In Rhetoric 104, I decided to at the problem of segregation in a social context level. I worked with different RSOs, such as Black Student Union, African student organization, Intervarsity, Hall Council etc. I also participated and volunteered with different organizations, went to events in order to gather information and ideas about how diverse the university was, and Finally, I interviewed students and staff to get their perspective on my

    I think Washburn values diversity because having diversity at a university presents all kinds of thinking and reasoning strategies from different types of students. Also, there are more ways to come up with results and solutions when there is a diverse setting containing students from different backgrounds.
