Does diversity matter in today’s world? From the stars in the universe to the options on a fast food restaurant menu, diversity is omnipresent. The New Oxford American Dictionary defines diversity as “a range of different things”, making the term applicable to social, economical and environmental aspects of today’s world. Through examining the impact of diversity on ethnicity, socio-economic status and the environment, I will determine the importance of diversity in today’s world.

Biodiversity, or the variety of life on Earth, allows for a variety of abilities in a variety of organisms. As such, organisms depend on others for survival, through various cycles such as the food chain (which shows relations between organisms based on what other organisms they eat). Biodiversity also contributes to many environmental services, such as producing food through photosynthesis and nutrient storage and recycling. These services also provide economic benefits, through biological resources such as food, medicinal products and wood. Another important example of diversity in the environment is diversity in electricity generation. This allows for a balance between economic and environmental repercussions. Methods such as fossil fuels and nuclear fission are cheaper to use, however, affect the environment through releasing greenhouse gases and producing radioactive substances. Renewable methods such as solar power and wind turbines are more expensive, but have a smaller impact on the environment. The varying costs of electricity generation provides choices to countries: developing countries can use cheaper options to avoid economic constraints arising from more expensive options and increase economic activity, while developed countries can use renewable options to generate electricity sustainably. Diversity in the resources available for food production, such as pesticides and irrigation technology, allows for more choices based on various implications. With an expected population of 9 billion by 2050, there will be more mouths to feed. Farmers can produce food based on their economic situation and the resources available to them in order to better cater to people’s need for a balanced diet.
