Diversity can be a variety of elements that exist in a group, institution and throughout the world. This includes the diversity in religion, race, language, gender, political orientation, and many other classifications. Nurses get a taste of diversity like a kid at an ice cream shop. Unfortunately, where there 's diversity there 's disagreement. And so, nurses must have patience when they happen to meet the human version of a headache, whether that person is a patient or a colleague. The amount of the elderly is said to increase by 135%. The number of older adults ranging from 85 and older is predicted to increase by 350%. These statistics mean that the amount of the elderly needing health care will increase, and nurses will be seeing more of them the years to come. These are some of the reasons why we need to be educated in diversity, and how to properly deal with it.
In order to develop effective strategies that can be used at a hospital nurses should make an effort into understanding the values, norms, and needs of their co-workers. Diversity in culture does at times get in the way of completing a task at it’s full potential. For example, a nurse and his or her partner could be clashing at each other on whether they should allow a patient who wants to die because of their beliefs.
