Diversity tends to be a widely discussed topic for colleges. Colleges are always trying to find the latest ways to drive their campuses to be diverse and open to attract new students as well as make the campus to feel further inclusive. The colleges that I will be covering will be Blackburn College, Yale, Howard, and Middlebury. Yale stands as a historically renowned college and marks itself as one of the top ranking colleges in the United States. Howard is a college in Washington, D.C. that is historically black, the type of diversity that results from this will be radically different than that of Blackburn and Yale. And finally, Middlebury College is a compact liberal arts college located in the village of Middlebury.
From my experience, Blackburn College tires to pride itself in its diversity and inclusiveness. This may be true in some instances, but not all. For example, according to Cappex, people who are white make up 84.2% of the students, while people who are black make up 7.2% of the population, those who classify under any other separate ethnicity is in the one percent or lower. …show more content…
It can also be based around gender and different fundamentals of of the college. A harder piece to measure out would be the diversity of experiences. In the bigger colleges there would naturally be a larger range of people from different walks of life. In the smaller schools located in small farming towns there might not be a varied pasts with in the people. International students would also play into this aspect. They come from a different culture so naturally there would be a totally different past experience with them. They might have lived a rich life and bought a passport to get overseas or they might be refugees trying to flee the country and was picked up by the United States.
