Companies nowadays are adapting a more diverse workforce as a strategy to justify their business case with the principal of moral case in order to have a competitive advantage upon other businesses. Myrtle Bell (2012) defines diversity as “real or perceived differences among people” and Consultant Thomas Roosevelt (2006) considers there is a direct link between diversity and organizational culture given that the way people are treated at work is a reflection of the organisation’s culture. Therefore, by promoting a diverse environment, employers are able to improve performance as well as to reduce discrimination.

They are able to eliminate discrimination in order to encourage inclusiveness and thereby boost performance and productivity. Olmec’s research (Lloyd & Ahmed 2008) found that whilst many organisations operated with an equal opportunities policy and made explicit their commitment to diversity in their mission statement and aims, there was still some work to do to ensure that diversity was embedded in all aspects of the organisations’ work. Key to this was for diversity to be driven by the most senior people in the organisation. Business pay attention to morality as it is their duty to care for the community, to provide them with a sense of dignity for being part of their organisation and feel valued for what they are. Companies embrace diversity for different reasons, these can be: market, talent, values, goodwill or innovation (Gravely, 2010). For example: Nestlé embraces diversity to create “shared value”, Westpac wants to be the “the world’s greatest companies for diversity and flexibility”, BHP Billiton supports business case for diversity as “diversity improves business results and shareholder”, Vodafone wants to “attract the best talent there is globally”.
