Importance Of Diversity And Education

As a first generation student from a rural area of South Carolina, my exposure to the outside world was very limited. Attending the University of South Carolina gave me my first chance to converse with a diverse group of students from various backgrounds and cultures. My exposure to diversity and social issues came through two outlets. The first was my inclusion in the McNair Post Baccalaureate Achievement Program, which gave me my first chance to have intellectual conversations about issues facing our state, our society, and the state of academia. My continued exposure to social issues, as well as the place that offered me a chance to face these issues head on, came from the place I would call my “home” at USC: the Leadership and Service Center. …show more content…
These few hours of grueling work sparked a dedication to serving my community and during my time at USC I served over 300 hours. Over my four years I worked with community gardens, homeless shelters and food kitchens, educational programs in local schools and libraries, health services for the elderly and economically disadvantaged, mental health outreach, and social outlets for individuals with disabilities.
While direct service was what drew me into community service, what I enjoyed the most was outreach and education to students concerning social issues affecting our campus and the surrounding city of Columbia. I was able to do exactly this through three separate positions I held while I was an undergraduate: I was a Community Service Ambassador my sophomore year, a member of the Leadership and Service Team when I was a senior, and a University 101 Peer Leader both my junior and

I am serving my year of service at The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina. The transition from USC to The Citadel has challenged me in multiple ways: the university lacks in the diversity that most other institutions of secondary education have with most of their students being white males but the college has made incredible strides and as a VISTA I wanted to aid in the continued forward movement of the college. As well, I had to quickly adapt to a completely different social climate and internal language than any I had encountered before. In my time at the college, I have aided in the creation and implementation of new curriculum for afterschool programs serving economically disadvantaged children in schools in the local school district. As well, I have been deeply involved in engaging students through service learning courses and connecting them with community agencies to serve the greater Charleston community. This student engagement will culminate in the largest program of the academic year: Leadership Day, a college wide day of service where normal activities are ceased and every student enrolled in the college is sent out into the community to serve with various organizations including local schools, the Habitat for Humanity, and the Ronald McDonald House. Being a VISTA has not only allowed me to experience the professional world

It would be the greatest honor to be a TRIO SSS transfer mentor for Wenatchee Valley College students. I am interested in being a transfer mentor because as a first-generation college student I understand that being a first-generation student of color comes with barriers, but also gives me a unique and valuable perspective with which to bring to higher education. My parents only have an elementary education and have no understanding of the U.S educational system and as the middle child of five siblings, I understand the responsibilities and pressures youth in these populations have with shouldering the burden to accessing and disseminating information to their entire family. Additionally, I understand the cultural challenges some students of color may face as many traditional households discourage pursuing…

Through my high school and college careers, I made community service a top priority. I completed many hours through my high school and extracurricular activities such as three years of participating in Wisconsin Day of Service, four years caroling at nursing homes for Project Merry Christmas, and four years helping plan and work the Spencer FFA Easter Egg Hunt. In college, I worked as a server for the annual benefit dinners, volunteered as an escort for guests during the week long convention held on campus, and headed up and created the first ever Freed-Hardeman University Change War with the proceeds going to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.…

There was never a dull moment due to the wide range of diversity, talent, and personalities of students. I made amazing lifelong friends that appreciated my presence, ideas, and personality. Everyone treated other’s contributions with respect and consideration of their ideas and views. Each discussion and activity opened my eyes to recognize meaningful things that society normally overlooked.…

At Xavier University we believe in the “All for One and One for All” philosophy; showing that camaraderie and equality among all are still possible. One way Xavier lives up to its support for students is through the one-year long Smooth Transition mentoring program. I served as a smooth transition mentor to three incoming first-year students during the 2016-2017 academic year. In order to ensure that they have a successful first year at Xavier, I informed them about the resources Xavier University provides, including the writing center, mathematics lab, tutoring services, Ohio link, and much more. I also advised them to make good decisions and form relationships with people who would motivate them to succeed.…

Tutoring and reading with elementary kids, one feels the easy-going and silly, yet striving to open up and soar child, also longing for life.…

Community service has always been a priority in my life, with this scholarship I will have more time and freedom to pursue my philanthropic goals. As a Diversity Scholar I currently volunteer 10- 12 hours a year for the Department of Community Engagement and Multicultural center on campus. Yet, due to my demanding work schedule I am unable to participate in many other community service projects. However, if selected for the Shawn Carter foundation scholarship I plan to meet the 25hr/ of community service requirement by joining the Diversity Outreach Team, Volunteering at the Campus food pantry, and Participating in Alternative Spring break. I believe that the future of positive diversity within our country is at a cross roads as another presidential election approaches. While political candidates leverage the differences within society to create fear, I hope to use this same diversity to better myself, my friends, and the university. I appreciate the efforts of the Ohio State University to promote diversity and inclusion and look forward to these experiences as I move on to the next chapter in my…

In the academic institutions of today’s society, educating young minds on issues surrounding equity and diversity not only within education systems but also within the society we as individuals relate to, appears to be an increasing desire among educators and parents. This desire arises from the growing concern that issues involving equity and diversity must be implemented into course curriculum to alleviate concerns that young generations are not given opportunities to learn how to properly approach controversies and obstacles with these topics in their society. By incorporating materials and concepts of equity and diversity into all classrooms, including collegiate level classes, I believe that individuals will develop an improved understanding…

Most teenagers would not be excited to give up their phone for a week so that they could live with a group of teenagers whom they had never met previously so that they could spend time during their summer vacation doing service while at school; however, that is exactly what I and each of the other participants on my Adventure WV Habitat trip did at the end of this June. I really enjoyed this trip because although most people could not imagine spending a week disconnected from technology, I actually found it to be refreshing, and I found that it helped me to stay more engaged with the activities of the trip as well as with the other participants. During our time spent helping out at the Habitat for Humanity worksite, I was able to learn how…
