Trying to see things from another person’s perspective is very important in avoiding interpersonal conflicts. Our emotions especially anger and stress can take over in these situations, causing emotional flooding that encourages us to act impulsively and prevents us from thinking and responding rationally (Gottman, 1994a). Some people in relationships try to avoid conflict by ignoring the important issues rather than trying to resolve an issue. Without acknowledging that there is an issue you will not be able to find any resolutions which is what creates the conflicts. There is so much built up resentment and stress caused when you do not deal with your issues that it will make you drift apart from one another and cause your relationship to fail. You must be mindful of the things you say and do so that you can avoid and manage your interpersonal conflict. Take into consideration that during times of conflict being irrational or going into a conflict without being level headed can create bigger issues than what where initially present. Dealing with issues as soon as they come about and coming to resolutions helps you to grow stronger as a person, which will help you to become a stronger couple. My husband used to keep his anger inside and he would not talk about things that bothered him, he bottled everything

To be respectful, couples must not judge their partner just because they have different interest or hobbies. Let the person be themselves. Acknowledge the person by providing positive feedback to help them develop as a mature human being. Also working as a team and learning how to tolerate the differences between each other can transform the relationship tremendously. In addition, when Ciardi mentioned that sometimes respect can be lost with just a simple mistake: “most like an arch-an entrance which upholds and shores the stone-crush up the air like lace”, he explains how life can be very unfair by making a relationship more stressful than it already is (Ciardi 1040).…

Your partner doubts are a proof of either propensity to trust, abusive sense of control or a broken past. The lack of trust comes from our beliefs and values to your emotional maturity. Subsequently it can be caused by the fear of losing control over something, and for this case “someone”. You want to have “direct and complete power”. Control is the opposite of trust, and in relationship we can give all of our love, and security, but however being “overprotected” drives your significant others away.…

People who associate themselves with groups that are criticized and denounced tend to feel threatened. They tend to stand up for what they believe in so others will not believe the criticism surrounding their group (DiFonzo 245). A “wish rumor” also ties in with cognitive dissonance. If cognitive dissonance is when you have conflicting ideas or beliefs, a wish rumor could possibly sway you to believe one way or the other. As Rodriguez mentions, the human brain tries to eliminate all cognitive dissonance, so when a person is met with two or more contradicting ideas, they tend to reject theories, rumors, facts, and truths that contradict their ideology or worldview (220).…

We need to be able to let go more quickly of relationships that don’t make us better people and hinder our growth. I do understand that letting go of someone that you have developed a relationship with over time can be scary. However the prospect of not reaching your potential and suffering through constant frustration because of an inability to let go of something that is harming you is more frightening. Realize that the comfort a person offers, be it words, intimacy, gifts or just a human bond can be found elsewhere. Defensiveness can “hurt the entire team or organization because it includes a tendency to place blame, categorize others as morally good or bad, and generally question others’ motives” (Hughes, Ginnett, and Curphy, p. 291). I believe assertiveness skills are especially important in multi-cultural teams because this means one has the knowledge to know when to deal with conflict. Some cultures avoid conflict entirely and may resolve conflict in a written exchange, rather than in person. In many Eastern countries, for example, “open conflict is experienced as embarrassing or demeaning; as a rule, differences are best worked out quietly” (Dupraw and Axner,…
