In a relationship one way we get to know the other person and how we let them get to know us is from self-disclosure. Letting each other know intimate or private details about your life helps build trust in the relationship. Letting your partner know your intimate experiences and beliefs is good for building rapport but making sure you don’t disclose too much information is also important. I have told my husband everything about myself, the good, the bad, and the ugly but sometimes I wish I had not. Trying to see things from another person’s perspective is very important in avoiding interpersonal conflicts. Our emotions especially anger and stress can take over in these situations, causing emotional flooding that encourages us to act impulsively and prevents us from thinking and responding rationally (Gottman, 1994a). Some people in relationships try to avoid conflict by ignoring the important issues rather than trying to resolve an issue. Without acknowledging that there is an issue you will not be able to find any resolutions which is what creates the conflicts. There is so much built up resentment and stress caused when you do not deal with your issues that it will make you drift apart from one another and cause your relationship to fail. You must be mindful of the things you say and do so that you can avoid and manage your interpersonal conflict. Take into consideration that during times of conflict being irrational or going into a conflict without being level headed can create bigger issues than what where initially present. Dealing with issues as soon as they come about and coming to resolutions helps you to grow stronger as a person, which will help you to become a stronger couple.
