Digital Portfolio Assignment The Corner Stone Seminar course at Charter Oak State College is intended to help students develop skills in areas of critical thinking, research and digital writing. I came into this class with no real knowledge of what the course entailed until I was purchasing my books and looking at the syllabus, at this point pure anxiety set in as I have never been a person who could put her thoughts clearly in words. My only thought was this was going to be a long eight weeks. I have never put much thought into writing as it has never been something I cared to do, so I had to stay focused and learn from my peer and Professors responses from pieces I had written. I kept Google on stay by, next to my books as I attempted all my assignments. I have always found that the beginning of the paper is the hardest part for me, once I have that piece down the rest flows, so paying attention to how my peers have started in their discussions, or papers has helped me start my papers in what I had to say. I spent a lot of time on Perdue Owl, and Booth,Colomb,Williams, Craft for Research which helped me distinguish writing …show more content…
My paper is a debate on” Does Capital Punishment Deters Crime”? I have shown all research done on both the supporters and those who oppose the death penalty. I show research and articles found that support both views, and state how clearly as shown by Elhrich, Radelet, Akers and others who oppose the death penalty and the earlier finding about how it deters crime, that there is no clear scientific findings that show that the death penalty deters crime. The death penalty was earlier thought to be a deterrence to crime and was supported due to those beliefs, but now with all the research we clearly can see that it’s not a proven fact and our government should work on abolishing the Capital

The author’s point of this article was to give insight to the controversial view points on the death penalty, being in favor of those who deserve the capital punishment and opposed to those who do not deserve it, and argues that until the death penalty is not justified even without uncertainty to those that deserve it, and the moral deterrence is abolished from those that favor it, the argument against it will never…

Over the second half of this State and Local Government course we have been reading and discussing The New Jim Crow by Michelle Alexander. The overarching theme of this book is incarceration, and its purpose is to change the way we think about the world and its systems. All of our class discussions on incarceration, and all it entails, led me to wonder what the connection between incarceration and crime is. In this paper I will be using multiple sources that have to do with crime and incarceration in order to find out how incarceration relates to crime rates, and if incarceration is the reason for crime decline. I will go over all the information I found on this topic, including my findings on incarceration, statistics and rates, as well as…

Adrianne Haslet-Davis writes such a vivid recognition of enforcing the death penalty by the use of deterrence. She focuses on an individual story, hers being coming close to death. She goes on and on about if any individuals was murdered the life of the murderer should be also. The community tends to always use punishments to put down criminals from their cruel and heinous actions. However, with our crime rates so high, it's plain up simple that the smartest punishment for any murderer should be execution.…

Ernest van den Haag didn’t use a large amount of evidence to support his opinion, instead, he used a lot more common sense and moral and non-moral purpose of death penalty to explain why capital punishment should not be abolished in the United States. Surprisingly, Ernest van den Haag didn’t use any sources or research findings to serve as evidence, instead, he liked to explain his perspective by simply saying it. An example of this can be found in his third point, where he points out that according to some research data, death penalty is the most deterrent punishment available in the society without citing any sources. Besides the evidence and sources utilization, his logic is clear and well maintained throughout the paper. He gives several real life example to demonstrate his point on the death penalty problem, the case and effect relation is clear and solid.…

The morality of the death penalty has long been, and still is a controversial topic in the United States. People have been debating for centuries whether or not this form of punishment should exist. Those supporting it have claimed that the death penalty acts as a deterrent of future crimes. On the other hand, those against it have disproved this claim. Studies show that capital punishment should not be used in the United States, since it does not act as a deterrent, certain groups are more likely to be sentenced to death, and it does not offer closure for families.…

As a reader, I was able to find the evidence I was looking for to support my argument. In my first writing, “Gladwell’s Missing Factor”, I was able to deeply analyze the theories Malcolm Gladwell wrote in his book, Outliers. As well as bring outside evidence of a current class I was enrolled. As a writer, I was able to construct strong arguments to capture my reader’s attention.…

A writing experience that has stood out the most for me was when I was a sophomore in High School. There was a girl in my class who I wasn't so fond of who one day decided to announce to everyone that she had begun to write her own stories. She showed everyone pieces of her writings expecting to get nothing but compliments and be to deemed the class writer, but when she finally showed me her work I cringed at how deplorable it was. The stories had no clear perspective of whether it was written in first person or third person view, some of the simplest of words were spelled wrong, and many words were used in the wrong context. The class didn't seem to care for her stories so they just gave standard responses with no words for…
