Sleep Diary
I collected data from my sleep pattern for two weekdays and two weekend days. The first night of my study was on Wednesday September 17, 2014. I went to bed at 10:00pm, and fell asleep at 10:30pm. I woke up at 6:00am. I never awoke during the night. My total sleep time for the first night was 7 hours and 30 minutes. My quality of sleep was good. I slept very well and never awoke nor was I disturbed during the night. I never took any naps that day. My overall sleepiness/alert today is 1 out of 7. I was quite tired when I awoke at 6:00am, but as the day went on I became more alert. I went to sleep at a decent hour, but waking up at 6:00 AM, only gave me 7 hours and 30 minutes of sleep. Even though I slept well without any disturbances, I still had a hard time functioning; I never got to my full alertness until noon.
On the second night of my study. Weekday two Thursday, September 18, 2014. I went to bed at 9:00pm, and fell asleep at 9:00pm; I fell asleep as soon as my head touched the pillow. I never awoke during the night. My total nighttime sleep was 9 hours. My quality of sleep was wonderful! Even though I was groggy when I first awoke, it only lasted about 30 minutes and then I was ready to start my day. I never took any naps this day. My overall sleepiness/alertness today is 1 out of 7. During this night I had 2 vivid dreams, which is a characteristic of REM sleep, which can bee seen on (pg.193) of the text. I typically have very vivid dreams throughout the night. It should also be noted that most REM sleep cycles only last around 90 minutes (pg. 193) and I had been asleep for up to 9 hours during this night, prompting me to believe that I had undergone both REM sleep and of course SWS. I also don 't recall having any sleeping disturbances that had caused me to wake during the night aside from possibly waking when the dreams had ended.…

The night that I had gone to see my parents I had gotten 11 hours of sleep, compared to the next Saturday, which I had gotten seven hours. In fact, this observation holds true, even after the sleep log had ended: this past weekend the Cross Country team had left campus to go to a meet in Kentucky and the night we stayed in the hotel I had gotten nine hours of sleep. I also found though analyzes of my sleep journal that the nights that I had taken allergy medication (Benadryl) I slept for longer and what felt to be a deeper sleep. I believe this could be a result of the side effects from the medication or the need for more sleep while I did not feel…

When I wrote the analytical essay, I worked from four in the afternoon until ten at night. It turned out to be my weakest piece, but I still gave my all. For the first movie review draft, I worked on it for 8 hours straight without stopping. Not once did I write something in an hour, use spellcheck as my only proofing tool and felt shameless turning it in. With me, it was all or nothing.…

In recent years I’ve come to terms with the fact that I need at least 8 hours of sleep to be able to function normally during the day and ideally between 9 and 10 to feel fully rested and energised all day. On average, in the past six days I got 8.8 hours of sleep, one night I only got 7.5 hours, the lowest in my recording, and the most I got was 10 hours. The night I was able to sleep for 10 hours (9/23), I felt fairly happy, not stressed, and quite energized even though I was fairly anxious throughout the day. On the other hand, the night I only slept for 7.5 hours (9/27), I had hardly any energy, I wasn’t alert mentally, and I felt generally bad. Now, it’s impossible for me to say that the amount of sleep I got was the deciding factor in…

The day we landed we went to the home my parent have in Islamabad. We were all really tired and jet lagged, but we knew we had to get rest before our first day of relief effort the next morning. I stayed up most night talking with my cousins who had come to stay with us for a week to help with the clean up efforts. We really didn’t talk much about the earthquake because we were catching up about each others lives because they live in Pakistan and we hadn’t seen them for 3 years. Nobody really got much sleep that night, but the next morning all of us seemed to be ready to start helping out in the relief.…

After about thirty minutes of working, my mother walks out of her bedroom. Now in my house, everyone except my older brother and I, is in bed, and asleep by nine o’clock, so my mother to walking out at nine-thirty was a surprise. She told me, “It’s too late for you to be up on your iPad. Go to bed.” I wasn’t about to tell her that I waited until now to write a ten-page essay, so I simply said, “Yes ma’am,” and went to…

Given, that is usually after several nights of not getting enough sleep, going to bed late, and waking up early. My abnormal sleep pattern kept me constantly tired, but it was spring break. Sure I went to sleep late, but I also had the opportunity to sleep in, so I was well rested before I started my little experiment. That Tuesday I slept over at my grandma’s house with my three siblings and my two cousins. I still went to bed late but not as late, just as I had the previous few nights.…

Scullin writes about how much sleep we should truly be getting:

While the average recommendation for a good night 's sleep is seven to eight hours, it can range anywhere from four to 12 hours per individual. Some people can function on very little sleep, while others need up to 10 hours to feel rested. (Scullin, 2015, p. 16-17). With the range being anywhere between four to 12 hours per person of sleep needed at night, it’s amazing how some of us survive the days with the lack about of sleep that we’re actually giving our bodies every day. The amazing thing about this though, is whom the lack of sleep effects mainly throughout our society.…
