Developmental Reading Memoir

When it comes it reading, it is something that I often cherish and embrace. However, I have faced many obstacles to have the reading capability I have today. From humble beginnings, I was muted and was unable to speak my native language Creole or English. Which resulted in some delays in reading development. Once my family and I arrived to the United States it was difficult to adapt to our new setting due to knowing English or us not speaking. During my school days, I had to take speech development to develop my phonetic awareness. I was far behind on my reading skills. It was quite difficult to overcome those barriers.

During my journey of learning, I’ve had people that were more of my support system.

A few television programs have encouraged me to read and write. Those programs include Sesame Street, Arthur, and Wishbone. I used to read Wishbone books and watched the shows when I was a kid. It wasn’t until second grade and third grade that I began writing stories and illustrate pictures in my composition books. By doing so, it has immensely improved my reading and writing skills over the years. With added practice and picking up new styles throughout the years it has really shaped my writing all the way through graduate school. It’s not perfect, but I am determined to further my reading and writing skills.

Many people have a different idea of what a true reader is. Everyone reads differently and it based on how they have learned to read. Some may just skim through a book while others may take notes and highlight a book. In other words, readers work along with their strengths. Not to mention that all readers don’t read the same materials. Some may just enjoy novels, while some may just enjoy reading the sports section in a local newspaper. That means that the readers preference matters entirely either for pleasure or for an

To say that I am a reader would be a stretch. I can not remember the last time I picked up a book for my own personal pleasure. Some would say that should bother me, but I can’t agree with the reasoning behind it. Mostly people bring up how books have broadened their horizons and changed their way of thinking, which is something I can’t relate to. Instead, I would say that I agree with what a good book should do, but I can‘t say I have found a good book, or a page turner if you will.…

It’s interesting, really, to see some of my old papers from middle and high school. I look back and laugh at the time, maybe around the third grade, when my classmates and I would groan and complain about having to write an ENTIRE PARAGRAPH. Now, after years of writing significantly longer academic papers that stretch far beyond a simple paragraph, my style and the depth of my topics have evolved based on what I’ve read. The most important pastime for anyone who wishes to write, unsurprisingly, is to read a wide variety of material, starting at a young age. Studies have shown that children who read more than their peers exhibit a larger vocabulary as well as more complex writing styles.…

Mary Beth Stevens suggests writing supports reading by asking students to draw upon common knowledge and thinking processes (2014). In the Texas Treasures Literature curriculum students continually respond to text through writing activities. At the end of each section they record their responses by writing a personal response. These responses require critical and higher order thinking skills because students answer open-ended questions and utilize summarization, inference and interpreting meaning skills. This allows students to explore their own thoughts and make connections to the text.…

Beginning from grade school through middle and high school, we learn how to read and write as we grow. More importantly, we learn how to grab and hold onto many things; the illusions that we aim to achieve, called dreams. The drive to push and better yourself to grasp onto unexpected possibilities, we call opportunities. The belief and confidence that you hold within you, we call faith. Independence as your hope, in all experiences that you’ll be able to make something towards your future.…

“Write to be understood, speak to be heard, read to grow”, as once said by Lawrence Clark Powell, is something that I have grown to understand and believe in through my day- to- day experience in everything that I do. In today’s world, where technology is evolving, reading and writing are essential towards acquiring any job or skills, I begin to look back at my life and appreciate the time and effort my parents put into making my education a success, and it couldn’t have been so without reading, writing and grasping every little concept. The Journey wasn’t always easy, there were days when the road was smooth and the sky was clear but, there were also days when the road was rough and the storm was raging. I can remember vividly when I…

Reading Literacy Narrative When I was a child, nobody has ever read to me. My father was too busy working, and my mom used to tell me stories by heart, not reading it from books. Confident was the key emotion I felt upon submission of my personal narrative essay, The Lone Book. Though I felt extremely vulnerable for another individual--a stranger at that--to read something that I hold so dear to my heart, I was still rather confident in my piece and hopeful for a 100%. I felt the strength of this paper was specific to the topic I chose to write, a bit risky but, something unique; not a typical cookie-cutter approach. Additionally, I considered my choice of strong vocabulary words an improvement, resulting in another strength of the paper. Unfortunately, the weakness of mine, which holds true to most of my writings, comes with the improper use of grammar and punctuation.…

My Path to Literacy For a very long time writing and reading was a huge struggle for me. I was one of those students who was very intelligent, but disliked reading tremendously and was often told, “You write the way you talk”. The older I grew the more I realized that my struggles with writing was due to my lack of reading. I was aware of my issues but because it became a part of my writing habits it was hard to adapt to anything different. I wanted to be like everyone else and be a good authentic and productive writer but it seemed almost impossible.…

Final Reflective Essay Three months ago, I came to Advanced Reading and Writing Class already realizing that I wanted to improve the ability to express my ideas. As this semester is nearing completion, personally I have grown and learned more than that I thought possible, as both a reader and a writer. With respect to Advanced Reading and Writing, taking this course, as far as I am concerned, is the most challenging task during this semester since it lasts for three hours, and to be honest, it is difficult to pay a hundred-percent attention all the time.…
