Cultural diversity is essentially the existence of a multitude of different cultural and ethnic groups within a society. Cultural diversity continues to increase here in the United States, hence the need for healthcare professionals to have at least a basic understanding of a variety of cultures prevalent in the society in which they are providing care. Furthermore, it’s important to provide culturally competent care, which means “having the knowledge, abilities and skills to deliver care congruent with the client’s cultural beliefs and practices” (Blais & Hayes, 2016, p. 399). Furthermore, it’s not only important to understand your own cultural beliefs, values and traditions, but also how they may differ from other cultures.
