Change is followed by fear. Depending on how a person handles this fear they will either succumb to violence or passivity. It is a rare portion of the population that will face their fears head on with courage. In the story Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda written by Becky Albertalli such courage is exemplified by the character Simon. In the book when Simon said he was “tired of coming out” (Albertalli, 40). what he was expressing was humanity's innate desire for things to be the way they always are. By Simon being tired or resistant to change, yet deciding to face his fears despite these feelings Simon manifests true courage. Simon, grew up in a community that was “weirdly segregated” (Albertalli, 24). The author included this detail in the story to show the reader that not only the characters, but, the very setting of the story is against Simon. His dad during the story makes several derogatory inferences about the gay community. At one point he makes fun of a man calling him a “one man pride parade” (Albertalli, 20). Simon’s father is clearly is uncomfortable with how open some people are with expressing their sexuality. Since Simon is gay this forces him to suppress a part of himself from his parents. However, as the story goes on and Simon and Blue’s relationship develops, gradually Simon gains the courage to overcome his fear and face the change he was afraid to face. “I’m gay” (Albertalli, 108). With those two words Simon stuck his neck out, not only in his family at the time, but in his community.
