She had threats spat in her face daily and her and her friends lives were consistently on the line. They were all in danger and so they were provided guards to protect them daily. She had gotten very close to a guard named Danny who had talked to her and respected her like a normal person would. They became something like friends and Melba came to look up to Danny and really did admire him. Later though the government decided to give her school the responsibility of taking care of the little rock nine. This was a problem because it was obvious to the little rock nine that the school did not care for their welfare. After Danny was taken out of the school with the other guards Melba and her friends were exposed to the dangers of their fellow students proposed to them and as you could have guessed she was scared.
