Selecting AAC Vocabulary The second module describes the importance of vocabulary. It states that some of the devices our students may use come preprogrammed with vocabulary and picture, but if the vocabulary the student needs or wants are not there or they cannot find it due to the unfamiliar pictures/symbols then the devices becomes useless. This selection goes into detail of the vocabulary that each level of communication would be useful. In the emerging communication level, the goal is to identify the first, reliable method of symbolic communication, and the related vocabulary that is familiar to the individuals lives. You are able to do this by different strategies such as; likes and dislikes checklist, observation, communication breakdown diary, and analysis of inappropriate behaviors. The first strategy will determine what the individual really likes or dislikes so that the communication can focus on those things they like. The second strategy is to observe the individual in order to see what interests him such as the activity he/she likes, food they eat or drink, or items they enjoy playing with. The third strategy is the communication breakdown diary which requires three steps; jot down notes at the time a breakdown occurs on anything handy, at break time, record your memory of any breakdowns, and each evening, jot down what you remember that day. After you have compiled the diary you are able to go back and analyze what vocabulary/pictures could have helped prevent the breakdown of the individual. The last strategy is analysis of inappropriate behaviors which can go hand in hand with strategy three.
