Content Area Literacy Specialist Project, Part I As a content area English Language Arts Literacy Coach, I am support Special Education ELA teachers in segregated 6:1:1 special education setting. I focus on the eighth grade ELA curriculum that is given to the teachers to use and modify as needed. The curriculum that the district has purchased for the teachers to use is Expert 21, it is a sixth-eighth-grade curriculum focused on various types of texts for students to read and analyze to ultimately assist them to learn a twenty-first century of skill that will help them be successful in college and their careers. The rationale for choosing this specific ELA curriculum is due to the fact that numerous readings in each workshop are at grade …show more content…
Gasiorczyk stated to me in conversations that she is particularly struggling with meeting the needs of all her students while following the provided curriculum. Another component Mrs. Gasiorczyk is struggling in is providing students with enough opportunities to write. Students create a piece of writing in response to each reading on a weekly basis, it is difficult for students to go through the entire writing process in one class period. One of the essential components of the Expert 21 curriculum is that at least one day a week is devoted to reading a novel from the provided list of appropriate novels for the Workshop, it is due to this that Mrs. Gasiorczyk feels that she is not providing ample time for students to write with little …show more content…
My role is to support all teachers in modifying instruction to support the needs of their students in the classroom. This is my first year in the role of a Literacy Coach, I feel as though I have a responsibility to new and returning teachers to be able to come into their classrooms and support them in any way they need to provide exemplary instruction to their students. I believe that I am a proficient reader; I am able to provide evidence to support the main idea of text, read fluently and be able to comprehend texts at the graduate level.
I earned a Master 's of Science of Education as a Literacy Specialist; therefore I am proficient learner in content of English Language Arts. I am able to proficiently teach parts of speech, literary elements, determining the main idea and supporting details of a text, synthesize and analyze a piece of text to determine theme, and teach proper traits of writing. I have five years of experience teaching Special Education English Language Arts with the Expert 21 curriculum.
