Conquering Mountains When little things are bothering someone too much it will start causing problems in relationships and everyday life. A significant other took the trash out, a good event, but they forgot to put a new trash bag in the bin. A person not experiencing being bothered by little things may just be happy the trash is out. Someone bothered by the small incidents, however, may look past the good act and be more irritated by the missing bag. When the irritation turns into an argument it can confuse and hurt the significant other. Furthermore, sometimes the focusing on small, irrelevant issues can cause the person to hold onto those negative thoughts. It is full of large projects, important papers, and daunting deadlines. The stress will often have the fight or flight responses in the mind screaming FLIGHT! But that stress can be useful in a few different ways. In A Working Mother article titled “The Upside of Stress,” Katherine Bowers writes, “When your stress levels start rising, it’s helpful to remind yourself that the pressure is often temporary, but that achieving your goals will have lasting meaning” (58). Turning the negative, stress induced thoughts aways from how much of a nuisance school work feels like and putting the focus on how the work will be rewarded later. Also, worrying and thinking about stress is a lot of energy. If one could learn to take that energy and motivate themselves to use keep pushing forward instead, many more doors of possibility open up. For example, using that energy instead to devote more time to school work. That could be more time studying or being sure to set aside time to work on projects and papers. Making sure to also use some energy to ask for help if needed, from tutors or teachers. Bowers, earlier in the article “The Upside of Stress,” says, “By giving us that kick of adrenaline, stress can help us focus and achieve” (56). Still some may think to go to therapy, maybe turn to meditation or exercise. All of these options are very soothing acts, that may even help in other aspects of life as well. They are all known stress relievers and can benefit physical health as well. However, they are more post stress solutions. Yes, maybe before working on a big project people may go for a run to calm nerves but the run doesn’t help with dealing with the problem itself. Running can help clear the mind but overall it isn’t helping you prepare your mind to tackle a project in productive way. Meditation is a very nice idea, it can help with the head clearing, calming and maybe even with the thinking about how to tackle a project. It does require a lot of time though. Meditation requires a quite area and time to get in the zone. While people out there do have the time, it may add extra stress to someone without time who is trying to give meditation try. Lastly, going to therapy is definitely a good option. It is connecting with someone else who can have outside insight on the stress. Therapy is, however, very costly as well as time consuming. Scheduling time and having the funds for continual therapy may add yet another stress to one’s life. Trying to find ways to manage stress shouldn’t come with an added expense of more
