Humans live all around nature and are constantly having their lives impacted by all forms of nature. Often times today, people take nature for granted. People tend to be so caught up with their lives that they rarely take time to reflect on the beauty of nature that surrounds them. Nature plays a major role in each person’s life. Some people live their lives in fear of particular elements of nature, such as the animals and natural disasters. Although there can be harmful effects from an individual getting too close to nature, having a strong connection to nature can benefit mankind by promoting a person’s understanding of self and by giving society a better understanding of human behavior. Being alone in nature can help a person become self-reliant, which promotes his or her understanding of who he or she is as a person. A person is not influenced by other people’s opinions when he or she is alone. In the essay “Nature,” author Ralph Waldo Emerson states, “To go into solitude, a man needs to retire from his chamber as from society” (242). A connection to nature offers people time to reflect on their lives without the constant distractions from their work and social life. Although Emerson’s work is from the 1800’s, his ideas are still relevant today. People can discover their beliefs, goals, and priorities by reaching outside their comfort zone, and into nature. In the article “The Role of Stillness and Quiet When Developing Human/Nature Relationships,” authors Valerie Nicholls and Tonia Gray interviewed participants on a wilderness retreat. One of the authors, Tonia Gray, reflects on the restorative effects the quiet environment offered for the participants by stating, “From this perspective, the significance of the wilderness environment may lie in its ability to slow down the body, calm and open the mind and to provoke different ways of being and doing that in turn raise the possibility for broader definitions of self.” Many of the participants described how being in a quiet environment where they could reflect on their surroundings, helped …show more content…
Nature was created to benefit humanity, which is why humanity should give back to nature by embracing it and not abusing it. People should spend more time outdoors appreciating nature because they can learn to become self-reliant. Being alone and at peace with the natural beauty of nature helps people to learn responsibility and to look at the way they live their lives in a different perspective. Individuals are easily distracted with the responsibilities of life, especially when city life can be so exciting and entertaining, but people should realize that venturing out and connecting to nature can be beneficial and even more exciting than their regular city
