The purpose of this essay is to highlight the importance of conflict management as conflict that is not properly managed can take up energy, time, and resources of those who are involved. Additionally, intense conflict can cause stress, leading to health and emotional problems which may cause consequences such as absenteeism and turnover.

From the incident, I realised that unresolved conflict can cause displeasure within staffs, which can influence them in resigning, which can affect the amount of staff turnover and the staff to patient ratio. As a result, the quality of patient care can be at stake. Learning the strategies of managing conflict will be helpful for me in providing optimal nursing care and also achieve effective communication and relationships with my co-workers, as it is also a required standard nursing practice as evident in Standard 5, which states to maintain open and supportive communication with the healthcare team to promote effective working relationships for optimal client outcome. (Singapore Nursing Board, 2011) In other words, successful conflict management helps us have good relationships with our colleagues, which will enable us nurses to uphold Value Statement 9 of the Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct of Nursing, which is to maintain a practice environment that is conducive to the provision of ethical healthcare, which means we respect the values of healthcare colleagues and collaborate with them to advocate ethical healthcare. (Singapore Nursing Board, 1999) Apart from improving rapport with other healthcare workers, the strategies learnt will also improve the relationship with anyone I know as everyone is bound to face conflict in some part of their lives, even if we do not intend to, enabling me to be a better individual and nurse for the healthcare
