Reflective Essay: The Importance Of Community Arts In Schools

¬Our community arts project is aimed at families, an original community play to help restore Fremantle’s cultural and historical significance. Fremantle has been divided by this issue in recent years and we want to push the focus back to growth and development, focusing on families, relationships and belonging. We think this will remind the people of Fremantle the importance of community projects in bringing people together, as engagement is important for the well-being of local communities. Art based projects focus on teamwork and communication, this will contribute to people’s relationships in a positive way and can help build trust between the locals. This sense of belonging is what could help this community overcome their mistrust for each …show more content…
We also used Facebook chat and group meetings, to keep the lines of communication open. This helped develop and maintain a strong working relationship, where people felt comfortable asking questions and giving advice. This meant we only had to tweak, instead of drastically change sections in order for them to flow. As there was more than one group member majoring in advertising, marketing or graphic design, we designated roles to cover all promotional areas. I covered predominately printed media and the business side. While Megan covered the digital side, acting as our online presence. As I had previously studied media planning and other business units, we decided it would be good to have both an arts approach and a business approach to marketing. By combining these two approaches, we are able to emulate our future professions and I believe this gave us a more believable and genuine …show more content…
I found, however, that it was very rewarding because I feel Creatives often underappreciate the business side of advertising. Learning both sides of advertising can give you valuable insight into the likelihood of your ideas being successful. Whereas learning only one can make you doubt your work, or the acceptance of it by others in your field. I am naturally the kind of person who needs to feel in control and this project has taught me a great deal about myself. Proper knowledge of a subject gives you confidence and the ability to think outside the box. Even though I am now strictly a humanities student, I feel I can use what I have learnt from my business units, as a competitive edge in my future field. Prime examples of why we cut out the arts programs in America, economic decisions such as layering the budgets so thin that it leaves no room for the arts programs. “According to a May 28th article published by The Atlantic titled, "The Country's Cultural Capital Has a Big Arts-Education Problem," low income areas in NYC look to cut out art education because of tight budgets”(ArtSchools.com). If we leave the decision making of school budgets up to the politician it is obvious they will choose to cut the arts first. This is due to the fact that they don’t have a way of effectively testing in this area of study, and don’t foresee the benefits of what the arts has to offer our students. As a society we think we need to focus on Math Science…

As a service learner, it is my goal to better myself, assess and improve my social awareness and responsibility (especially involving social justice), and to do something that is meaningful to me. I wish to improve lives and people’s days, even if it is something incredibly minimal like making a child smile by coloring a picture for them. I want to feel invested in my community. It is these reasons which lead me to choose working with the America Learns after school program at the Tobin K-8 School. There are opportunities and instances every day when I feel like I have made an impact in a student’s life.…

Experiences rich in the Creative Arts (CA) fields of visual arts, dance, drama, music and media are settings ripe for meaning-making; influencing how individuals perceive their sense of self and how belonging is fostered to people, community and place through exploration of social and cultural values and attitudes (K-6 Creative Arts Syllabus, 2006). By furnishing children with open-ended opportunity and environment for personal expression and imagination, and respect for the space to make and respond to self and others with creativity and innovation, they develop skills to interpret and appreciate artful work and more broadly, a safe place to risk-take and explore possibilities supporting development of the child’s personality, talents, mental…

Thomas Watson, former chairman of IBM said, “Nothing so conclusively proves a man’s ability to lead others, as what he does from day to day to lead himself.” In my current position, the best things I can do to strengthen and improve the teaching profession are to teach to the best of my abilities, be a professional, maintain a positive attitude, keep my focus student-centered, and influence other teachers to do the same. One of my fellow teachers, Mrs. Pam Parris, and her exceptional children’s class, sponsor an initiative to encourage students and staff at our school to “be the change” in how students with special needs are treated. The effects of the Project Unify program have been astounding. Mrs. Parris’ students are able to participate in my band and chorus classes side by side with regular education students.…

Three years into my high school I hadn't gotten into the state of mind that most over achievers have. I had floated through high school thinking I was trying my very hardest to get good grades and become a consistently studious candidate of my school. However, no matter how hard I tried I failed I gave into all the distractions and used all my obstacles as excuses became frustrated and developed an attitude problem that I had created myself. Being a consistent 2.5 student wasn't satisfying or inspiring. Uniquely enough, I had decided to take challenging courses my junior year.…

According to the text Living with Art by Mark Getlein, there are six primary roles that artists fulfill in society: artists “create places for some human purpose” (i.e. monolithic art as Stonehenge, Gobeki Tepe, churches, etc..), artist “create extra-ordinary versions of ordinary objects” (for instance the World’s largest ball of yarn, or Tintoretto’s Last Supper), artists have been used to “record and commemorate” historical events (such as a wedding photographer or Pablo Picasso’s Guernica depicting the carnage of the civil war of Spain), artists give “tangible form to the unknown” (for instance the abstract and cubist movements of the 20th century, or the design of man-made objects), artists “give tangible form to feelings and ideas” ( works…
