1.0 Introduction

Professional communication is of vital importance in the media industry due to its fast paced nature. People working within this industry must have impeccable communication skills and this report will explore why this is essential. Within this report, a branch of the media industry, social media, will be analysed. As well as looking at this branch of the industry, this report will look at the different types of communication skills needed to succeed in using social media such as digital, visual and written, and how having these skills is of great benefit when working in the media business. The negative effects which come from not having these skills and using social media will also be examined in this report.

Having impeccable written skills is a must due to the fact that the nature of social media is based on communicating through text. Knowing how to adequately communicate written questions and ideas through social media may not be enough though, it is about 'being able to translate difficult ideas into simple ones so that everyone can understand them ' (Herbert,1999, ix). By having the skill to convert problematic ideas into more straightforward ones, it is easier to broadcast these ideas to a wider spread audience as everyone will be able to understand what has been said, whereas before, the idea would not have met as large an audience due to people interpreting it …show more content…
Without knowing how to communicate properly through social media, someone may accidentally 'let internal and privileged information suddenly go public virally ' (Deiser & Newton 2013) instead of sending it privately. This could cause a lot of problems for businesses as their competitors might see the information and use it to their advantage and the leaked information could cost the business a lot of money which is why having a high standard of communication skills is vital. With posts being able to be shared with the click of a button, mistakes can be spread quickly and this may result in a lot of negative backlash for a business and if they do not know how to handle it properly it
