I had to accept that any failure that I received was completely my fault. Accepting personal responsibility is a must in college. As kids transform into adults, and become more independent, the importance of their choices continues to grow. As a wise man once said, “with great freedom comes great responsibility.” In my college experience, I’ve already seen kids start to fail their class because they lack the ability to accept responsibility and prioritize their life outside of school. If a student wants to be successful in college, he/she needs to get on the horse, and accept personal responsibility. The ability to better myself in this category directly interacts with the previous four skills. Without self-motivation, a student will never fully commit to his/her schoolwork. This will result in a decrease of all categories. Self-management will decrease as the student’s motivation eventually burns out. Self-awareness and personal accountability drop as well, resulting in the student beginning to blame the professor and other outside forces for his/her failure. The last category to be negatively affected as a result of lacking motivation is employing interdependence. Interdependence, being the skill of contributing as a group, plummets as the student becomes a leech, just sucking off of other’s work. Discovering self-motivation, goes without saying, is the most important ability a student possesses. I was able to discover self-motivation by finding how a certain aspect in every course applies to my major or can better my life in some way. In Art History, I realized that not only was I becoming more “cultured,” but I was also becoming familiar with staying interested in a very boring topic. Utilizing On Course, I was able to adapt to the changes that come with the transformation into college. Along with adapting certain aspects of my life, I was able to build crucial skills that will assist me in my education. I will continue to work to increase my motivation as it will directly impact my
