It 's a direct, honest, and appropriate expression of one 's feelings and opinions”; where aggressive communication is “standing up for oneself in such a manner that the rights of the other person are violated in the process. It 's an attempt to humiliate or put down the other person”. Being assertive helps to maintain a therapeutic nurse-client relationship by being able to clarify your own thought, making it relevant and share it at the right moment. You are respecting others by not questioning and being defensive when expressing your own ideas and opinions. Sometimes, it is really hard to not taking words from our clients too personal such as swear at you and calling you stupid because you do not have the answer for their questions but with the use of assertive communication, it helps me to act like a professional and that person would be feeling respected. I know it takes time to be a professional and eventually I will be come more capable to answer some of the questions that are commonly asked by most of the clients on L&D unit. I believe that the more experience I have gained, the better I will be as a successful

The moments shortly after labor seem subtle and all worth it for brief moment; but it is just the beginning to the journey of a long parenthood. So, what about the nine months before labor that makes the journey so excruciating for a couple? For a woman, it might be the pain that comes with a growing baby inside of them, or the immense amount of hormonal spikes they endure. During the long journey a couple takes on many obstacles throughout the three trimesters, but few people actually shed any light on the man’s role during a pregnancy.…

Chances are that at some point in everyone’s lives, people will have experiences in the ER, whether they are being admitted, having tests done, or just visiting a loved one. Many people who visit emergency rooms think they are very strict and high-stress environment; nurses are speaking to each other by using jargon that few people understand. What patients do not see is the hospital from the perspective of a staff member; it is completely different from a nurse’s point of view. I chose to observe an emergency room to reveal how the nursing staff functions, as well as confirming or busting the stereotype of how hospitals run based on television shows such as Grey’s Anatomy. I contacted my aunt, Emily Clarkin, who doubled as my informant.…

Upon taking the Newline Ideas Communication assessment my two highest scores were in Assertive and Aggressive categories scoring a 17 and 16 in both of those. Realizing that these scores are only one point away from one another and reading the explanation below them, I came to the conclusion that most of the time my communication style is Assertive, but there is also a good chance that my style would also fit into the aggressive category depending on the situation. Upon interviewing my friends and my current boss they agreed upon the term decisively cautious as how they would describe my communication style. In particular, my boss stated that I approach each situation differently and depending how what the goal of the communication is I act…

These behaviors can be seen in the nurses to the left that are sitting together and working as a team in order to discuss what is occurring in their workplace. Along with these communication strategies there are other phrases that can be said that redirect the conversation from being uncivil to being more respectful. For instance if a nurse were to being to yell at a coworker and say that they did something wrong, it would be important to go into another room and discuss what was done. Also by saying a phrase such as, “I did not know that I had made an error, is there any way we can address this issue together to find a solution,” opens up a discussion that includes both people and allows for a…

    Bedside Report Reflection

Hi Sally, my hospital also enforces mandatory bedside report by all nurses during shift change. I actually enjoy performing bedside report because of several reasons. First of all, I am a visual person so being able to see the patient as they describe how their shift went for me, really helps me understand what had happened and what to anticipate on my shift. Second, if the patient is awake, alert, and oriented, they can be involved during the report by adding on anything they felt the nurse missed or answer any questions I ask them during the report. Third, I have a good view of the room, equipment, continuous bedside monitor, medication drips, and other necessary equipment that they need.…

I agree with you that the doctors are presented partially during the birth process. Looking back, I remember I spent the majority of my labor with a nurse, not with my doctor; however, my doctor helped me throughout the entire delivery process and had a manageable and non-medicated birth to my first child. Also, back then, like you, I was young and was not informed about midwives. If I would have known, probably I would have considered having a midwife, someone who will be there during my labor, however, would prefer to give birth in a hospital as well, since I believe that hospital is cleaner and the doctors are able to find quicker and clever ways to deal any serious complications that might…

Pregnancy in adolescence has been connected to a variety of unfavorable maternal and infant outcomes. Health risks for teens and their infants include low birth weight, risk of prematurity, developmental delays, and poor prenatal weight gain.…
