It is Saturday September 26, 2015, in the house of Aaliyah’s mother in Fort Myers. Aaliyah, a five year old, is eating breakfast with her mother. She is eating eggs, bacon, and toast for breakfast. She tends to stop eating, inspects her food and eats again. As I stepped into their home, Aaliyah was very shy of me sitting near her but she continued eating her food. It took her about thirty minutes to finish her meal. The television was on while she was eating. The cartoons were on. Sometimes, she’ll shift her head to the television and focus what is on the screen than what’s on her plate. She is displaying deficiencies in her attention due to salient versus and relevant dimension (Santrock, 2012). She watched cartoons that she liked such as SpongeBob, Adventure Time, just to name a few. I spoke with her regarding of her favorite television show, but she did not interact with me, as she is attentive to the television screen. Sometimes she will respond saying, “I like this show” or “This is fun!” She’ll sometime calls me big head (probably heard that from her classmate at school). She’ll also interact with the characters from the show. Regardless, I can tell that she is enjoying her screen time. As she continues watching television, she suddenly became fatigued and needed some rest. She asked her mother permission if she could go to bed. Her mother let her go to bed. As Aalyiah is sleeping, her mother and I discussed her progress regarding of language development. She has mentioned to me that Aaliyah has been learning a lot of new words so she has been very talkative lately. Santrock addresses that in early childhood, children learn the words they hear often and what interests them. She is continuing to learn new words from her home, school and in the
