Censorship: a necessary evil? What is it that separates humans from other animals? It is the fact that we are a social species and cannot survive without any communication with another person. This also gives us the ability to express our thoughts in multiple mediums including, music, art, literature, etc. At the same time this ability also differentiates us from one another as others may not share our views on a particular subject. Right from our daily conversations we tend to restrain our speech or trail of thought depending on the person we are interacting with, as a way of avoiding things that can offend them. The hip/hop and R&B genres have been greatly affected by this as many of these artists rely heavily on suggestive themes and language to express them. Songs have been altered in many ways to respect each country’s policies; the suggestive words are often distorted, muted or replaced with a ‘beep’ or in some cases completely changed. Throughout the years rap songs and similar music have been subjected to many controversies as their lyrics are often very violent or contain sexual references which can be easily picked up by a younger audience. So, many radio stations throughout the world follow the above methods of censoring music as to not offend any of their audience. At the same time, the censored material may be a part of the core of the song so it affects what the artist wishes to express. The famous rapper “Eminem” has been criticized and even fined many times by the media and the censor board for his excessive use of foul language and the descriptions made by his alter ego “Slim Shady” of the brutal and cruel things that he thinks of. -CNN. One of his first songs under the Slim Shady persona, “The Real Slim Shady” contained intense and graphic imagery including lines referencing sexual intercourse between two men and insulting the people who want to censor his music. News groups often have a partisan attitude and the news they show is often based on this, they also block or censor news that opposes their group and in this way influence their audience. Money is also an element that affects the news presented. Groups can be paid or offered money to show or block certain information. They can also modify the true information to support their views. Governments of countries like China and North Korea that are under dictatorship can use force to easily censor news that can affect their control over the population. The Chinese president Xi Jinping even once quoted “All the work by the party’s media must reflect the party’s will.” a policy that majority of political groups around the world follow. However not all censorship policies are for political or financial gain, in some cases news may be censored or modified as the information may risk the national security of the country. During the devastating Mumbai attacks of 2008 in India, the conflict to secure the final terror site was dragged on longer than it needed to be because the assailants were getting this has brought in a certain restraint for media coverage and access.
