Importance Of Censorship In Films

Great Essays
Censorship in films can be best described as the maxim “see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil”. Especially in Malaysia, the censorship in films are very strict when it comes to sexual content. With this being said, citizens of Malaysia have very minimal, almost close to none, in terms of exposure to sexual content in films. The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia, as known as ‘Lembaga Penapis Filem’ or ‘LPF’ for short, is under the control of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Board was established under the Film Censorship Act with its role being revised in 2002. This act bans the possession and screening of pornography or proactive materials. Film that contains sex scenes are strictly censored or prohibited. The main objective of …show more content…
But with the excessive censorship, films loses its purpose of being a powerful tool to convey messages that are educational. In this case, the censorship of sexual content in films should be lenient and allow appropriate air time for decent sexual content. This allows parents and children to have discussions and healthy conversations about the sexual content seen on television. Parents can also educate children on what is exaggerated and what is the appropriate, respectful way between two adults. This not only allows the children to be aware of sexual misconduct, also, be aware of respecting one another in a relationship. Furthermore, this allows the youth of a nation to be more knowledgeable and mature when it comes to sexual content. They wouldn’t be ignorant and are able to overcome or foresee situations that might land them in trouble. With this being said, cases such as teen pregnancy, rape, sexual misconduct and many more can be solved as viewers are more aware of what is right or wrong and situations can be held better. This comes hand in hand with progressing a nation as a whole. The Film Censorship Board of Malaysia can also cooperate with educational boards to further help with the awareness and this would develop a positive community. The appropriate censorship would allow a positive light to be shone on sexual content as it can bring educational purposes. Sexual education shouldn’t be something that is being shied away or deemed as inappropriate. If it constantly is being “cut out” or “banned” due to it having sexual content, then viewers wouldn’t be able to know what could and should happen in reality. With the proper guidance by the Film Censorship Board of Malaysia, and sexual education being one of the priorities in Malaysian syllabuses that are thought in school, censorship can and should be lenient as it serves it’s positive purpose towards the

The first amendment has been regarded today as the protector of free speech and expression in America, but it wasn’t always like it is today. In the early nineteenth century, the supreme court voiced out their opinions to restrict the newest medium of communication at the time, the motion picture. They stated that, “film was not a form of speech protected by the first amendment” (Hastings Law Quarterly). By limiting expressions shown through the movies, the government was restricting people’s views. In order to find out more about why media was censored in the past we should look first at the history of it, the messages the films were trying to spread and how it applied to the first amendment.…

Implementing changes to the MPAA, Motion Picture Association of America, rating system eliminates foul behavior, protects children’s environments, and models appropriate language expected from them. The current rating system hurts places such as school, streets, and the home environment. For example, if a teenager watches a NC-17 movie he will act older. Since the content is restricted from the teenager, it will instigate the teen to act more mature and want to act as the actors (Gustafson 1). He is now mimicking older citizens as if he was a young toddler learning how to speak.an easy fix to this is more security and cameras for the movie theater.…

A complicated word isn't it, ‘censorship’. It comes from the Latin word ‘censere’ which means to give as one's opinion, something nonexistent in an Anthem society. Like many things, a world without censorship can be scary, but a world with too much of it, is a world with no meaning. Look at Anthem, the people who live in that society have no meaning, no life, no importance. Although many people can't imagine comparing the United States to an Anthem society, I believe the United States is an Anthem society because America has huge amounts of censorship when it comes to the press.…

Censorship has long been a part of American culture, shaping the overall morals of the people. This is a point made in the excerpt from The Atlantic Monthly as the writer states that some will disagree with something being allowed to be shown in front of children while others believe it should be allowed. This issue is still present to this day and many people maintain very ambiguous opinions on the topic. These ambiguous opinions are capitalized on in the article as being between moralists and artists; those who believe these artworks being shown is evil and then those who only see the beauty in the works. The writer sums this up well, claiming that “Moralists will justify it for one set of reasons; artists will acede to it for another.”.…
