Censorship is a major theme in Fahrenheit 451 and is deeply explored and practiced. The novel demonstrates a totalitarian government which burns books because of the threat it presents. Books encourage critical thinking and are a great source of knowledge and ideas, and if the people were ever made aware of this fact, they would begin to question the ideologies and faults of their society. Lack of knowledge enables ignorance and ignorance promotes people who are susceptible to control. Another reason for the use of censorship in the novel is to promote equality. Some books contains materials that are offensive to the minorities. In time, books came to be seen as a dangerous means for one person to lord his or her knowledge and learning over someone else. In certain situations, it is good to censor and restrict ideas and topics from the public, such as protecting the people from self-harm and inequality in the society depicted in Fahrenheit 451, or protecting the minds of the young and innocent from obscene and disturbing topics, such as drug, rape, and abuse. In other situations, censorship hinders growth and puts a limit to creative thinking in children and young adults, as well as limit the exposure to concepts completely new to a person.
