Middle School Reflection

Holmes Elementary was a Black school, which helped me transition into Brownsville, a predominately Black school. One hundred and one students from several places received the invitation to participate in the Brownsville Middle School Magnet program. Of course, I did not get an invitation. I was thrust into that station with good reason and a glad heart. Thanks to Mrs. Rivers, I would have a chance at a normal life free of bullying, right? I had the time of my life for the semester that I went to Brownsville. Especially if by the time of my life includes a little of the familiar.
We went to Disney World as a group of magnet kids for a field trip, and a girl I crushed on taught me a lesson on the trip back that helped me to become a better person.

Now, I know that I did not understand words like antipathy back then. It fit the feelings I felt from her as I look back and reacquainted myself with the lesson I learned. I learned never to belittle a person for his circumstance. It was the first time the spirit of God convicted me of my self-righteousness. I made several key decisions in my life starting from the point that helped change my life about bullying. Yes, what I did was a form of bullying. It took a while to get ahead of my behavior, but I am jumping ahead.
I met Sabrina my first class at Brownsville. That time the feelings were real and mutually shared. I was immediately attracted to her. Her hair was long and kept close to her skin. She was dark brown, African American and very competitive. She excited my imagination more than I could contain! In all this excitement, however, never did I imagine anything that would diminish her chastity or bring me shame. I just adored her.
We were partners on a project that would end at the completion of the semester. We interviewed each other and wrote our impression about the other to see if those impressions would change over time and boy did they

Ten year old, Lafayette Rivers exclaims enthusiastically in Alex Kotlowitz’ 1992 biography There Are No Children Here, “If I grow up, I’d like to be a bus driver”. Sophomore year, in Honors English, we were reading out loud in class when this aspiration of a lower-income, innocent child, was lethargically muttered by a classmate, and to my dismay, I began to cry. I was saddened by the fact Naperville was less than 60 miles away from Chicago, yet my peers knew so little of what too many city children, like Lafayette who lived in Cabrini Green, had to endure. What broke my spirit, was that my peers were only sympathizing for that class period and would go on with their daily lives, giving no second thought to children who are less fortunate, who have to give so much just to help their families survive, and who are not even sure they will have the opportunity to grow up.…

Long, wide roads, small houses, and steel fences were my view as I walked into an unfamiliar building called Thomas Jefferson Middle School. I did not know anything about the culture or the language; a huge chill came over me, which I have never felt before. I felt goose bumps as I first walked in the building. The building was old and was not well cared for. The colors of the walls were fading and the elevators made the sound of a dying animal when it moved.…

Moderators: Moderators are needed to keep children safe and happy. Without, moderators the children would be playing outside, in an empty parking lot, all by themselves. If one of them got hurt or a stranger came to play with them, they would not be able to comprehend the situation and figure what to do. With the help of a moderator, the children do not have that worry on their heads and can play peacefully. Times I have been a peacemaker: I helped solve a conflict between two of my friends by making them talk it out, instead of ignoring the situation.…

English 219 was my first college level English course, and through attending and completing all of the assignments I have learned many skills that I believe will greatly help me in my future courses in college. Next semester I am enrolled in English 220, and after having taken this course I feel substantially better about continuing on with English courses at a college level. It has helped me to become more confident in my writing skills and provided me with an excellent basis for me to continue on with next semester, and throughout the rest of my schooling experience. Throughout this class I have learned many things, but perhaps the most important is the steps to writing an essay, and the planning options.…

For each person their meaningful interactions cause a drift in themselves. As for me I have had plenty of drifts but one that speaks out the most to me was when I participated in Science Fair my sophomore year in highschool. This experience allowed me to strengthen my drive for success and to become the independent student I am today.…
