College Admissions Essay: My Goals For Attending College

I spent most of my life traveling. My mother is a teacher. After my dad died she made lemonade out of a sour lemon by taking teaching jobs overseas. She did this for us. She wanted to expose us to as many cultures as possible and she wanted to give us a true worldview. I am grateful to my mother for doing this, however, it had its down sides. Because we moved from country to country I didn’t feel like I had a stable childhood. I didn’t have roots; I didn’t have a sense of belonging. I am craving that right now. My hope is attending college will give me the educational roots to start building my educational foundation I need in my life. Because I moved so many times over the last ten years I am looking to stay put. I want to make roots in all aspects …show more content…
I think if I started out at a traditional college or on a traditional college campus my educational foundation would have huge cracks in it. I think with all things a foundation is important. If you skimp on the material, you more than likely will end up having to redo the job or you will find yourself constantly making small fixes. I am not interested in doing either of those things. I want to have a strong educational foundation from day one. I do not want to have to repeat anything because I didn’t put my all into it or because I received bad material. I think between the effort I put into my schoolwork and the quality of the education I will receive. I can only end up with a strong foundation. All these things, I believe, will help me do well in college. I may be young but I am a nontraditional student. I have had a business since I was 16. I graduated high school early. I have no interest in being around party people, and I am focused on pursuing my educational goals; so I can move on to the next chapter in my life. I am looking for a place I can settle into so I can start building my education

Whether that includes a lifelong career or a few different jobs until I find the right fit is still to be decided. In chapter 2 of “Becoming a Learner”, Sanders states “Overemphasizing job skills distracts us from recognizing the primary purpose of education: to become a learner”. As I stated before, I used to believe that a college degree would guarantee me the profession I desired, which unfortunately is false most of the time. College does however serve the crucial purpose of teaching you how to learn. We always want to learn how to work in college, we want to graduate with job skills that need no further instruction, but that’s not how this system works.…
