Over the years, several Oscar categories traditionally offer a mix of gender, race and sexual orientation among nominees, including documentaries, shorts films, feature animations costume design, hair/make up and editing. As such, based on this year’s Oscar nominations, the general consensus does reflect institutional bias against minorities and women within the motion picture of Arts and Sciences. The academy’s lack of diversity has become so evident that, it attracted a lot of attention from not only the public but to a lot of Hollywood stars who are on the minority side of the spectrum. To an extent, African Americans are forcefully separated from other races, either legally or socially especially during the Jim Crow era. However, there are general discrimination practices against people of color by the white races. Segregation among the races even in the Oscars seems to be systematic as well. Diversity matters a lot in the Hollywood film industry. This is an institution working with highly talented people from different racial backgrounds. This institution must ensure that no room is given to segregation of any kind. They should set a good example in carrying everybody working for them and with them along. They should play a huge role in recognizing, respecting and accepting the minority groups. Jada Pinkett Smith presented an effective argument. They minority groups worked hard enough and not a single nomination was given to them. This will definitely be disturbing. Lack of acknowledgement as she stated is the growing outrage over the lack of diversity in this year’s list of nominees which shows the absence of acknowledgement that the industry has about minorities and African Americans in the film industry. According to her video, “Is it time that people of color recognize how much power, influence, that we have amassed, that we no longer need to ask to be invited anywhere?” To an extent, one might even argue that, their roles, efforts and talents are not even acknowledged by members of the voting committee. This year’s nomination also indicates the absence of recognition that the film industry has about minorities in the film industry in spite of talented producers like Spike Lee and extra ordinary actors like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Will Smith. The selection committee also shows lack of recognition and acknowledgement for play writers like Tyler Perry, Keenen Wayans and Forest Whitaker. Due to the of lack of recognition on the part of the film industry towards the minority groups, Will Smith the husband of Jada Pinkett Smith noted that he would not want to identify with an institution characterized by “separatism and religious disharmony”.
