Before my current employment I was at a crossroad. I was 23 years old and nearing the end of a bachelor’s degree with no idea what to do next. I was constantly being asked what my plans were “after Wayne State”. I had no idea. I assumed I would find something I enjoyed, and psychology offered many options. Then I came across a company providing in-home autism therapy services along with acquired brain injury. After a few interviews I was selected for a Behavioral Technician position. It took about four months for me to decide this was the career I was chosen for. Graduate school is something I’ve always desired but wanted to have an end career in mind before making the leap. To be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a Masters degree is required along with 1,500 …show more content…
I believe that my current experience is not only beneficial but an absolute requirement to be a successful BCBA. I do believe that based on my current education and experience I know a great deal about Applied Behavior Analysis, but I am far from knowing as much as my supervisors. I am very fortunate to work with six highly educated BCBA’s that are able to teach me the “in’s and out’s” of Applied Behavior Analysis. They have shown me important skills outside of implementing programming and have demonstrated understanding and patience with me. I have been able to see some of the miniscule details involved in the treatment process of a child diagnosed with Autism or have an acquired brain injury. The experience I have gained thus far paired with a master’s degree is going to lay an excellent foundation for continuing my career and maintain my own clientele. I will also be one step closer to completing research. I enjoy data collection and reading current research being done on Autism such as, early diagnosis, treatment and etiology. I believe it is the most important component to the treatment of this

Neuroscience researchers have conducted research on infant brain development, in hopes of detecting neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Autism) and applying early intervention strategies. In definition, Autism is characterized by poor social, communication, and behavioral skill development (Najdowski, 2009). In hopes of finding an appropriate intervention strategy, Reichow (2012) conducted a meta-analysis and found that the use of the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), on children with Autism, has proven to be successful. In addition, therapist and agencies have developed additional programs under the ABA umbrella; one program that is currently under the ABA umbrella is the ABA Skills Intervention Program (SkIP). Evaluating and analyzing the behaviors and developmental trajectories of infants, children, and adolescents, with and without ABA SkIP intervention, is needed to measure the effectiveness of the early intervention of ABA SkIP.…

I returned to college to complete my prerequisites for physical therapy school, where the PBL approach was first presented to me. I became a tutor for the Learning Assistant Center at City College of San Francisco, and shortly thereafter became a teaching assistant for my Anatomy professor. In these settings, I was able to utilize the PBL approach where my scientific knowledge had greatly expanded. I facilitated group demonstrations of the human cadaver, tutored students in and out of class, and made anatomy relatable and understanding to my peers. I developed leadership skills as I assumed more responsibility, and applied all the knowledge I learned from lab to various clinical settings including at the Veterans Affairs hospital and…
