Before my current employment I was at a crossroad. I was 23 years old and nearing the end of a bachelor’s degree with no idea what to do next. I was constantly being asked what my plans were “after Wayne State”. I had no idea. I assumed I would find something I enjoyed, and psychology offered many options. Then I came across a company providing in-home autism therapy services along with acquired brain injury. After a few interviews I was selected for a Behavioral Technician position. It took about four months for me to decide this was the career I was chosen for. Graduate school is something I’ve always desired but wanted to have an end career in mind before making the leap. To be a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), a Masters degree is required along with 1,500 …show more content…
I believe that my current experience is not only beneficial but an absolute requirement to be a successful BCBA. I do believe that based on my current education and experience I know a great deal about Applied Behavior Analysis, but I am far from knowing as much as my supervisors. I am very fortunate to work with six highly educated BCBA’s that are able to teach me the “in’s and out’s” of Applied Behavior Analysis. They have shown me important skills outside of implementing programming and have demonstrated understanding and patience with me. I have been able to see some of the miniscule details involved in the treatment process of a child diagnosed with Autism or have an acquired brain injury. The experience I have gained thus far paired with a master’s degree is going to lay an excellent foundation for continuing my career and maintain my own clientele. I will also be one step closer to completing research. I enjoy data collection and reading current research being done on Autism such as, early diagnosis, treatment and etiology. I believe it is the most important component to the treatment of this

I have volunteered for the BPSOS health fair each October for the past three years. The BPSOS (Boat People SOS) is a nonprofit organization focused on helping refugees. This organization sponsors free health fairs held in Norcross, GA with many health services for anyone who stops by. The services include influenza vaccines, various types of screenings, and physical exams. I volunteered with doctors and nurse practitioners at the bone-density screening booth, where I helped with the screening of osteoporosis for the underserved population. I participated in working the machine that screened for bone density and teaching those with negative screenings about the importance of osteoporosis. This opened my eyes to how many people in the public did not have daily access to healthcare, and how important these free screenings were for them. When the people who visited our booth smiled, held my hand, and thanked me after I…

Chandler-Gilbert Community College (CGCC) has guided me, a 49 year-old college sophomore, to utilize my academic grit in order to mentor other students, and past experiences to succeed in my educational and career goal as a visual healing artist. My 25 years of medical experience are rooted in my professional goal to be a visual healing artist. Mentors of my previous medical profession ranged from surgeons, doctors, and firemen to patients and their families, all of which helped me learn about human anatomy, kinesiology, and compassion for humanity. My medical career started over 25 years ago as an administrative assistant. I worked my way up the medical professional chain from my emergency medical technician (EMT) certification, registered dental assistant, x-ray technician, surgical technician, medical administrator of insurance billing and surgery scheduling, to an insurance agent of life and health, disability and long term care. Having a newfound understanding of the academic lifestyle and pushing towards my degree in fine arts, my academic goals also include a minor in behavioral psychology. Studying the effects…

Neuroscience researchers have conducted research on infant brain development, in hopes of detecting neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Pervasive Developmental Disorders (Autism) and applying early intervention strategies. In definition, Autism is characterized by poor social, communication, and behavioral skill development (Najdowski, 2009). In hopes of finding an appropriate intervention strategy, Reichow (2012) conducted a meta-analysis and found that the use of the Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), on children with Autism, has proven to be successful. In addition, therapist and agencies have developed additional programs under the ABA umbrella; one program that is currently under the ABA umbrella is the ABA Skills Intervention Program (SkIP). Evaluating and analyzing the behaviors and developmental trajectories of infants, children, and adolescents, with and without ABA SkIP intervention, is needed to measure the effectiveness of the early intervention of ABA SkIP.…

In this small little town, I found where I wanted to be in life, with the help of two great teachers. I went to Kearny High school and graduated 2012. Before coming to Queensborough Community College I went to another community college called Essex County College. I was not happy about going to Essex County College but it was what I could afford. I started to realize how easy it was to get A’s and I noticed my professor did not care about their students. With the lack of education, I was getting in Essex; I decided to go to school in New York. In Essex my major was psychology, but after I moved to Queens I took a year off from school because I was unsure what career path I should really be in and I did not want to waste a year in school with an undecided major. I worked many different jobs and I manly worked with children. I instantly fell in love being around children and I decided to pursue…
