This above all to thine own self be true is what polonious tells Laertes among other things as he embarks on a journey , in shakespeares hamlet .Be true to yourself is an adage that seems to have taken more relevance and importance in modern times .It maybe tattooed on someones arm or maybe be on an inspirational poster or even found in blogs. Being true to yourself is closely related to individualism. It means living the way we want to, believing in things we want to without bothering others. It certainly is a interesting philosophy.

We live in a world where appearances have always mattered. Traditions rituals and customs have dictated our lives since dawn of man. That is not to say that we were brainless automatons who never questioned anything, there were many who questioned and challenged but it is only in recent times that being true has become an important aspect of our lives.Though it generally meant being true to your morals and fo your heart it has now become an idea based on

All say the same thing with different variations. Shakespeares quote, this above all to thine ownself be true isn’t something new . it has been said and practiced for ages. In this claustrophobic world, that is a mish mash of people and cultures and ideas and beliefs and values, one person isn’t worth much. But I feel that these philosophies exist for a reason. I assume they work on the principle that when every one follows it maybe some change can be felt. But is it possible now? The world is teeming with possibilities and people but it seems more artificial now.IT could have always been like this, people conforming and leading a false existence while a few chose to walk on the path to discover their true selves. one can only assume and theorize about such situations. Maybe to exist we do need to be the same,be false,be hypocritical if only for the mechanism of the world to work

Hudson and Spalding have different views on individualism, self-government, and libertarianism. Spalding knows that individualism is one of the founding principles that the United States is supposed to believe in. We are a country founded on doing things yourself and not relying on others to do them for you, being self-reliant is one of the biggest things that they believed in. He talks about being willing to work for the things you need and not relying on the rich or the government to take care of you. He believes that the free market and the economy with limited government intervention is the best way to create a prosperous America that can lift all people regardless of where they begin into a more prosperous position economically and socially.…

The Myth of Individualism draws readers in with a captivating introduction through a controversial story about an individualist who kills to prove a point. This became a constant throughout the book, having examples used from topics that related to pop culture, politics and historical events to say the American values of individualism, mediocrity and self-sufficiency is overall fabricated. Therefore, American values are effected by the social structures on our lives which prove to be the thesis for Callero’s book. The book offers a weak first chapter with a strong fourth chapter that all fits into the message of Callero’s bestselling book. Callero’s book offered a first chapter that was the weakest out of the 214 paged body of work.…

I like the quote "Expect to be called a stand patter, but don’t be a stand patter. Expect to be called a demagogue, but don’t be a demagogue," in the speech given by Calvin Coolidge at Massachusetts. It might have a different meaning but to me, it means not to be what people call us. This is a common problem in the world today. We live by what people call us; our every steps and breaths are determined by people.…

Stand your own My quote is “Some walks you have to take alone -Suzanne Collins.” The quote basically means that sometimes you need to stand your ground even if not everyone agrees with your decision. I like this quote because it’s stating a strong message and its saying you shouldn’t go with everyone else’s beliefs or opinions. Also, it’s saying to go with what you believe in and that it’s okay to go alone and stand out.…

Religion teaches people how to use their freedom for the good of themselves and others. It is practically the sole means of counteracting the materialistic aspects of life by taking people’s minds beyond the physical, material aspects of life. Religion teaches men that being good is in their self interest because they will be rewarded in the afterlife. By working towards the common good rather than personal gain, people are forced to work together. Through these features of American democracy which de Tocqueville noted, Americans are able to balance individualism with the good of the community.…

Walking through a mall you notice that people are on their phones or another form of electronic; on them while alone, on them with friends, and even on them with their family. People in society have fallen into conformity, a conformity that supports social media over face to face contact with others. Undergoing a unit about nonconformity it was discussed that nonconformity is a tough thing to do. It can have great rewards but also some consequences. During an unplugging project, I got to experience what it was like to be a nonconformist in this day and age when it came to technology and our dependence to it, how hard it can be to break away from the social norm.…

“Your character will be what you yourself choose to make it” is a quote by British naturalist and politician, John Lubbock. I strongly agree with his quote for several reasons. I believe Lubbock’s meaning behind his quote is that no person can allow society to determine the mental characteristics he or she contains. In all seven billion people in the world, not a single one of them carries the same characteristics as any other person. If society is in control of how we act then it is impossible for us to be the way we are meant to be.…

From the points, believe one’s own thought, and the importance of self-reliance, they are both saying to be one’s own self. The difference in the points is that believing what one wants, and having self-reliance, go down separate roads. Believing oneself helps you with courage, whereas self-reliance helps with self-reliance. The points on being honest with oneself and the value of simplicity both show to be honest and free with oneself. However, the difference is that being honest won’t help one survive, being free will help one wonder and get to know where things are to survive.…

Altering Personality “To exist is to change, to change is to mature, to mature is to go on creating oneself endlessly” (Bergson). Many individuals assume that personality is something that they are born with, therefore it can never be changed. What these people have not thought about is that people can change their personality due to several factors. Three of the big five personality traits, extraversion, neuroticism, and conscientiousness can all be changed by life experiences, maturity and biological factors.…

"To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment" - Ralph Waldo Emerson It means that in an ever changing world, where most people conform to what society has dictated normal and what is not, the greatest form of success is living your life the way YOU want it. By waking up every day and knowing who you really are and never attempt to change just to reach the expectation of the so-called society. It also means that the greatest self-accomplishment you can have is by swimming against the current and being steadfast in your decisions. I can relate this to my life because I've never really tried to change or fake my personality just so I could fit in.…

To Value Is To Live Has anybody ever told you that being human has its many perks? For example we all laugh and cry we all love and fall out of love. However we weren’t ever meant to be the same on the contraire we are very different creatures at the source from the fingerprints we leave behind to the way we enjoy our freshly brewed coffee every single morning. All of this makes us whom we are but in my opinion what really defines a person for whom they are is what they value at heart. What a person values contributes to whom that person is and it defines what that person believes to be correct.…
